Why only some amps have ground pin?

just curious why some of the Rotel amps, 1095, have a third ground pin while others, like my 1075, don't?

is the 1095 "safer" because it has the ground pin?

Yes, the RB-1095 is "safer", in the event that internally, a power lead should come into contact with the the case/chassis.

Back when "double insulated" power tools became popular, the housing of the tool was plastic, and if the hot power lead internally came into contact with the housing, you would still be insulated from the voltage. A third ground wire would be unecessary, in that case.

Any appliance or component that has a metal case, would be safer if that case is tied to ground. Then, if a power lead internally contacted the case, it would flow to ground, and the circuit breaker/fuse of the house would trip/blow.

Without the ground, there would be 120V (or whatever the local voltage) just waiting for YOU to become the ground!

      Interesting.

I'm now wondering if any of my componants are grounded at all?

I have a denon 2805 (no ground pin), samsung HDTV (no ground pin) 2 DVD players (no ground pin) and Motorola cable box (no ground pin). Also my sub doesn't have a ground pin.

Is it unusual that none of your componants are grounded?

I live in an older house, and I did upgrade the AC socket to a grounded 3 pin GFCI socket. I also have everything plugged into a line conditioner that shows as properly grounded.

It's not that unusual to have non-grounded cord sets on components, especially on lower current draw source components. My Rotel RSX-1056, RB-1080 and subwoofers are grounded, whereas my DVD player and VCR are not.

Back to one of the original post questions - Why did Rotel make the RMB-1095 grounded, while the RMB-1075 is not - it would be very interesting to hear the explanation from the Rotel people on that.

Obviously, as you have probably read in this and other forums, many people have eliminated ground loop hum problems by removing the ground with a cheater plug or removing the ground pin on the plug.

I wonder if they chose not to ground the RMB-1075, to eliminate as many potential ground loop problems for as many customers as possible, that being their most popular amplifier, far outselling the RMB-1095.

From a safety standpoint, I have never personally had a component internally short to the chassis, but it certainly is possible. A grounded component would also probably be safer from the dreaded accidental spill of liquid into it :M.

RMB 1066: has the ground pin or not?
          by Locutus2k
I was thinkin to add a (bridged) RMB-1066 to my 1095 for back surround channels and one more central (processor is 1098). I was wondering if the 1066 has the ground pin in the power chord or not. Can anyone help me?
          Thx,

New Rotel/BW setup, ground problems, 1080

I set up my gear last night a fired it up. I bought the 1067 and the 1080 to bi-amp the fronts. I bought the Nautilus 803's. Inital thoughts, they sound much better than in the store. In the store they were actually too bright and wasn't blown away, i think the room was poor too. I bought them...

          Hey guys,
I have a ground loop hum in my system when I hook up my multi channel outputs from my DVD player to my Rotel RSP-1066(also if I run a s-video cable from my projo to my 1066)
The projo has the 3 prong plug with the ground. When I temporarily plug the projo into an old...

Another - RMB 1095 Ground Loop / Satellite
          by hamiltong
Like many others before me - after installing all my new toys (RSP 1068 & RMB 1095) - I now have the infamous ground loop hum. God it's annoying.

It's definitely attributed to my satellite coax feed. When unplugging the coax from the SAT receiver hum is gone. Or unplugging the S-Video...
