1066 DD-EX and MP3

The user guide suggested the some DD-EX discs have incorrect flag and the 1066 might not be able to auto-detect them. Is this the case for "Star Wars II" and "Lord of the Rings"?

Also, does any one here use the 1066 to decode MP3s? Just to test, I tried feeding MP3 digital output from my DVD player but the MP3 light does not come on? Got sound, however... not very important to me as I listen to MP3s only on PC.

Chances are if your DVD player supports a disc full of MP3's, it's all ready doing the decoding before it hits the 1066.

The 1066 will not decode MP3's unless you play them thru a device like the Harmon Kardon DAL150.

Of note, Rotel doesn't really "promote" this as a feature anymore because of the extra hardware needed to take advantage of this capability.

If you know that your disc is DD-EX and the display on your RSP1066 says only "Dolby Digital", then press the button for DD again on the Rotel, which will put it in DD-EX mode. This only works if you actually have 6 or 7 speakers setup. Only note that when you have setup 6 or 7 speakers on the Rotel, it will use Rotel XS to always use all of the speakers, even when using normal DD or DTS 5.1 sources.

There is no MP3 decoder on the Rotel. Your dvd/cd/mp3 player should decode this to PCM and the Rotel will properly use this. If it had mp3 decoding capabilities, they would advertise with this

Here's a quote from the 1066 manual, Pg 15 middle column:

The RSP-1066 also features a decoder for the digital MP3 (MPEG1-Audio Layer 3) compression format. MP3 format recordings are available on the Internet and can be played on portable MP3 players or some disc players that can read CD-ROM discs.

PCM 2-channel, HDCD, and MP3 are digital formats. They can only be decoded by the RSP-1066 from digital sources connected to the digital inputs.

Yes, see my above post. If you want to play MP3's straight from your computer thru your 1066, you need the Harmon Kardon DAL150.

This topic was discussed over a year ago on this forum and the official word from Rotel was you need the above mentioned piece of equipment. Because of this, Rotel stopped promoting MP3 playback as one of the features of the 1066. There isn't much they can do about the manuals given that they had already been printed, but they have removed the stuff about MP3's from their website.

Since most decent dvd players play mp3 cd's directly this feature isn't that usefull indeed.
Actually I never knew it could be done, but not going to use it anyway
