    RDV-1060..three questions

    1) Does the 1060 have the chroma-upsampling bug?

    2) Is it software upgradeble?

    3) If so could a software/firmware upgrade be applied for SACD in the future perhaps?

sacd requires special hardware and I doubt they put that into a machine without enabling it in the first place. So answer to 3 is No unfortunatly.

I'm not sure if it does or not...and I'd hate to guess and be wrong. Hopefully the folks at the DVD Shootout will take a look at it.

Andrew, I remember seeing a thread in one forum that consisted of manufacturers models that did or didn't have the "bug". Damn if I can find it now.

I just picked up my 1060 yesterday. Very nice looking unit and feels substantial. It's a little thinner than the 1080 with a similar look. The remote is a little more user friendly too with a nice intuitive on screen display. It also moves from chapter to chapter or menu items quicker than the low end Sony it replaced.

The firmware doesn't appear to be upgradable from the outside, but there very well could be some diagnostic port unter the cover you could tap into. The manual didn't mention anything about this...

As far as performance goes, I couldn't detect any evidence of the Chroma Bug but I am not an expert! I simply played the intro for Toy Story 2 a couple of times and compared it to what Secrets of Home Theater showed as an example of the bug.

If it matters I was running the video through an S-Video cable into my RSX-1065 and then out to the TV which is a NON Hi Def Sony XBR RPTV. Nothing hi tech. I would like to upgrade to a nice Samsung 61" DLP TV with Hi Def and use component cables, but that's still a little ways down the road.

Ron, thanks for the review and hoping someone using component cables and HDTV moniter can do the same.

                      Ron-

Good info but you're going to need to hook that bad boy up using the component outputs to an HDTV capable TV so you can run it in progressive scan mode in order to determine whether or not it has CUE.

I would love to know what scaler/de-interlacer they are using. It's a nice looking unit.

Too bad they will lose the european market with not putting pal progressive on it, but only NTSC. For 1200 euro its better to get a denon 2900 which includes pal progressive and sacd.

How does that player sound for regular CD's compared to the 1055/1066?

The first reviews for the new denon are out there and there are very good results. It appears to sound better than much of its competitors. However, I will *NOT* buy Denon ever in Holland, since the distributor here is an terrible company who break laws when it comes to guarantee.

But Rotel should definitly pay attention to its competitors and bring out SACD and Pal progressive equipment.

Does anyone know what other player the RDV1060 is based on? The 1080 used to be based on a JVC.

I was told by a rep that it's based on a Philips machine....But like anything from reps. I'd take that with a grain of salt. Although it would make sense in the context of the greater relationship B&W/Rotel has had lately with Philips co-operating on some amp designs for B&Ws new subs.

We got our allocated 5 in. So I imagine other Canadian dealers have gotten theirs as well.

Pal progressive has been added to the RDV1060 after the manuals were printed. A loose insert in the manual explains it all. Saw it yesterday at my Rotel dealer - looks great. True, it lacks SACD but the way it is priced (at least in this part of the world) one can buy a separate Sony SACD player with the RDV1060 and still come out cheaper than the Denon 2900.

That's why I ordered the Rotel yesterday, after considering numerous options. I also took a leap and bought the 1098 (only 4 in the country at this stage) and a RB1080. The 1080 will drive my fronts (Paradigm Studio 60's) and my existing 1075 the rears and two center speakers. Can't wait to put it all together.

We'd actually been considering Scarp for Club Rotel moderatorship. But since he jumped ship, that plan was awash. However, since he's now a Halo user, we are sure as it already shows, his participation and enthusiasm for the brand will follow.
