    Calibration & DPLII

Is this normal. I have a 1055 and did my calibration with the built in test signal, and when I play a DVD all the levels are fine, but when I play a vhs tape using DPLII I have to manually boost the surround and CB speakers.

Also, thanks Andrew for the latest software upgrades, and instructions, I did the upgrade the other day and everything work perfectly.

Normal in this case is hard to define since we're talking about your personal preferences in that DSP mode. I find a lot depends on the TV program I"m watching...some sound great in PLII while others seem lacking by comparison.

What kind of adjustments do you usually make? I find if I am watching a movie on vhs I have to increase both the surrounds and cb's from
0 to 8, to have the surround noticable.

I don't change anything. What happens when you choose DTS:NEO instead of PLII? Is that better or the same?

It sounds the same in DTS:NEO. I think I'll talk to my dealer and maybe try a tape at the store, maybe I am expecting the surrounds to be more prevelant than they are supppose to be. When I listen to a DVD the surrounds are so much more obvious, and the way DPL II is talked about, I was expecting the same.

          Thanks for your input Andrew!

VHS 2ch to Pro Logic II vs DVD 2ch to Pro Logic II right?
or VHS 2ch to Pro Logic II vs DVD Dolby Digital?

You should never expect the same. Don't let the Dealer BS you either.
Even when 2ch audio is mix correctly for Prologic or PLII will never sound the seem as a DDigital soundtrack.

I suggest that you use the outside source pink noise from a DVD like the Video Essential or THX optimizer to calibrate your system and always use a SPL meter with it.

Which Radio Shack SPL meter is better for sound calibration, the analog model or the digital model? Thx.

Most prefer the analog meter because when calibrating the subwoofer, the digital meter fluctuates quickly and it's hard to get an "average". On the analog meter, you can just follow the needle and get a good estimate.

                    FYI:
There's a SLOW button on the digital that does the averaging for you..

Not much volume from rears in DPLII - WHY??
                      by ejfiii
This is such a noobie question I am almost embarassed to ask it. But I was watching tv last night in DPLII and I just had to wonder why the sides and center backs are so rarely heard. Sure, they make noise, but a lot of the time to make sure they are even on, I have to stick my ear up to them.

last night i went to my bosses house since he just got galaxy quest on d-vhs. first off i have to say i had no idea that d-vhs looks exactly the same as any normal vhs tape. identical. you could accidentally return it to your video store. the only difference is on the back of the case, like dvd info,...

Well, I finally sealed up the calibration on my 56H80 and thought I would share my results. What follows is a review of the TV itself and the results of the calibration.

As many are aware, the 56H80 is the latest model of Toshiba's 56" 16x9 set. After suffering at the hands of downconversion...

                      by whmacs
                      Hi All,
More of an observation than anything else, but I recently recalibrating my subwoofer using Digital Video Essentials. This disk has a 75db output level. So as usual I set the front left speaker to output 75db (77 on RSP-1098) with the speaker level set to 0db. I then cut over to the sub...

I recently started noticing something "strange" while watching TV using DPL II in Cinema mode.
It seems like a lot of the voices are coming out of the front and rear speakers, when they should ONLY be in the center channel.
It's always been like this, but i've noticed it's program...
