    Question re: Direct vs. Multi-Ch

Is it safe to assume that for two-channel analog sources (ie SACD, DVD-Audio), it is irrelevant whether you use the Multi-Channel input (L & R only) or the Direct mode of one of the inputs?

    Thanks,

As far as the sound goes, there will be no difference whether you select 2-channel analog bypass or multichannel analog bypass for a two channel analog input source. In either case, all digital conversions and processing will be bypassed. But operationally there are some differences in the way the user interface will respond. For instance, if you use a two channel analog input, you can go "Direct" directly by pressing the button marked "Direct" on the remote, or use digital processing (such as subwoofer/bass management) features by selecting "Stereo" (or any of the modes other than "Direct"). However, if you use "multichannel" as your input, first, of course, you have to set it up in the setup menus, and then select it via the "Audio" button on the remote, toggling from the other default modes. And if you should choose a digital processing option while "multichannel" is in use, you will get an error message "Not available in Multi Ch" -- per the Instruction Manual "The operation is not allowed because the selected in-put source is set for multichannel input."

So either two channel analog or two channels of the multichannel inputs can be used for two channel analog, but you will need to decide which option is more convenient and/or makes more sense for your component configuration.
