Slight Hum Since Adding the 5250

I just purchased a Parasound New Classic 5250 5-channel amplifier and am now using my 7-year old Sony ES30 receiver as a front end processor until I upgrade to a dedicated prepro.

I have a question or two about some faint hum I’m hearing when I get close to the speakers (when both the amp and receiver are on). I’m not sure if it’s a ground loop hum problem, which I had in the past, and I isolated it to the coax cable going into the cable TV box. That problem has long since been resolved.

The question is that since adding the Parasound as the dedicated amp and now that I'm using the preouts from the receiver, I hear a slight hum coming from all 5 speakers when I get up close to them and listen. The hum does not increase in volume as I increase the volume on the receiver; the hum does not change when I flip the ground switch on the amp; there is no hum from the speakers when the amp is on and the receiver is turned off; and finally, with the amp on, when I turn on the receiver, there is no hum for the initial few seconds before the receiver *clicks* and has gone through its startup mode. Naturally, this is all without any source material playing. Also, I don’t have this hum issue through my 2 subs even though I’m using the 2 sub preouts from the receiver.

Can this slight hum be coming from the receiver or could it be the amp? Is this a case of when making an upgrade to better equipment, the other equipment shows its shortcomings? I’ve had no problems with the Sony for 7 years I’ve owned it albeit I’ve never used the preouts until now.

I also hear some transformer hum when I get very close to the Parasound amp; I’ve always heard the same from my receiver so I am assuming this is normal…yes/no?

Any help would be appreciated – I just want to be sure the amp is OK; if not, I may return it.

    Thanks, Jeff

Yes. In this case adding attenuators will help. You could try adding some cheap attenuators and see how that works out. If it helps, then move up to some quality attenuators like Harrison Labs...

thanks for the quick response peter! On a hunch, I pulled the coax cable from my cable box and presto, the hum was gone. my old ioslation transformer from partsexpress had cracked in half a while ago (after I no longer needed it). guess I need a new one. have you any suggestions other than the partsexpress model (it was about 9 bucks). thanks again, and I'm glad its not the Parasound 5250 (what a beast it is!) I can reccomend the Jensen ISO-MAX VRD-1FF CATV isolator. It's around $50, but can at times be found on eBay for much less...
