I do not know what a 6970 is but you cannot connect HDMI or any other digital connector or a line-level (RCA/XLR) connector directly to these speakers. It will not work.

You need an amplifier or, in your case, a receiver or prepro with HDMI input.

He's got a Radeon 6970 (Videocard with HDMI). I'm personally using a dedicated soundcard (Asus Xonar HDAV 1.3) which is also HDMI (and also digital Coax and Optical). I connect directly to my Pre/Pro. Same as he needs to do (I'm not sure on the audio capabilities of his Radeon, I prefer to use a dedicated soundcard as they normally have a more robust driver/app/settings adjustment).

Thanks. I am not on a first-name basis with soundcards.

Too many issues to answer yes/no.

Any prepro or AVR that accepts HDMI will have the necessary DACs.
Will it will be "good enough" for what?

$7000 for an LX85? Well, just plug the HDMI output into it. I doubt if the PC card matters if it has HDMI output. If I am misunderstanding your situation, I apologize but it is difficult for me to interpret what you are asking.

If I understand this correctly you have Bowers and Wilkins 804Diamond; a Musical Fidelity M6i and a Pioneer LX85? You are wanting to use this with a computer for music playback.

As a basic first step: have you tried connecting the HTPC to the M6i using USB. This will probably be a step up in quality from the analogue motherboard connection you are currently using, but can be improved and the 804's really deserve a better source.

At a minimum I would be looking at the level of a Musical Fidelity M1 DAC plus V-Link. If you can spend more (or even if not) there are many many options out there; get to a dealer and start listening to some.

Then you should just run hdmi from your graphics card directly to your pioneer lx85 for movies and music.

Then later on, you can add a dac for 2 channel music, however, depending on the computer, the dac and more, it might not necessarily sound better than the dac in the lx85.
