$700 for an ASW 850, or buy another sub...

Got a local guy selling a demo ASW 850 for $700. Sounds like a good deal, but let me know otherwise.

My question is, would my $700 be best spent on another sub? There's a lot of talk on this subject, but I thought I would put this question out there.

I running a pair of B&W 704's with an HTM-7 and Im 50/50 with music and movies.

    Thanks guys!

Is there a way to listen to it before you purchase? I really like B&W woofers, they're fast, musical, detailed, and have great dynamics. Some people don't like them because they might not play as loud as other similar woofers but for $700.00 I personally don't think you'll find anything better.

      Thanks eric!

I will try to go demo it today, but I dont have time to go demo another half-a-dozen more in fear this guy will be gone.

Does anyone have any first hand experience with this sub?

The ASW850 is not made anymore, but if it is in good condition I would not hesitate.

I am not normally a proponent of B&W subs because I think there is better value out there, but for $700 I seams like a steal to me.

I should mention my room is 24x16. Is this thing going to be too much or just right?

will do the demo a little later today.

My assessment is that the 800 series subs are quite good. I very much doubt you will beat it's performance for $700. If it's working well, it's a great deal.

              Hope this helps.

BTW: talked him down to $500. Hows that for a steal?

$500 for an ASW850 is more than a steal. Gret price. I suggest getting rubber 'feet to lift it off of your floor (hard floors) or spikes if you have carpet. I love my ASW 800 with my N804.

You can also put it on a riser. I temporarily lifted my SVS sub and noticed a difference. It seemed smoother and fuller. I plan on building myself one versus buying one.

                              Great advice! :T

I havent picked it up yet, but I'm a bit concerned about it shaking the whole house (the bass from the 704's seem to get through some walls).

I know, I know.... what a terrible problem to have, right?

its a public holiday for us today, and will need to wait 'till Monday to pick it up from the shop. (They are holding it for me).

To go with it I recommend you buy a Parametric-EQ, like the Behringer Feedback Destroyer off ebay; it will help you tune it to a flatter response and thus sound more musical and smoother.

If you have people who complain about the bass, you can even customize your own "night-mode" type setting with the filter banks and save it.

I've done sneaky things with the filters in the past, like filter out all frequencies above 21hz so that you can still feel the deep bass in the infrasonic range but since nobody can hear it outside the room they don't complain about it. LOL
BTW you can activate a preset filter-bank at anytime with a press of a button.

                                      WOW :E

Same cherrywood finish and the 704's, but FREAKIN' MASSIVE!

I work from home (and today got very little done). Of course I couldn't resist trying it out once I brought it inside. AMAZING! How did I get by all this time without it? I played a couple quick songs and a movie scene (Bond Quantum of Solace BlueRay)... just awesome!

but will have a chance to play with it more latter on!

Best $500 I've spent in a while. I will attach some pics when I get the chance.

The asw I grabbed is in just fantastic shape!

This guy also has a velodyne DD-10 that has nearly every corner dinged-up. Works just fine, but cosmetically isnt great at all. I talked him down to $350 +tax, but decided to pass.

I think the B&W is better compromise for HT & music than the DD10. I think the DD10 would be very quick for music, but at only 10" it would lack in the bass extension for those movies that we love to hear (or should I say feel).
