I got an offer today to purchase a new center channel at a 20% discount, would you guys consider this a good deal?

    Thanks

uuuhhhhh yes extremely good deal! Most dealers won't even discount. Just shoot a phone call to a few others and find out for yourself. If I was you I would take advantage of this and buy even more stuff. I wouldn't name the dealer as on this thread either, they can get in trouble for discounting B&W speakers.

I thought 10 % was fairly standard. He told me that their business is down and they would like to get there #`s up. Of course this came with the " can we do this now?" line. Told him I`d call him later this week.

20% new is a great deal if its brand new and not a discontinued model.

Yes, it`s new and not a close out. I guess that really was question. If you got a 20% discount, would you buy new or still go the used route at about 40% discount?

            mal01,

Either of these are very good scenarios. But new at 20% off is very good. If the used at 40% off is from a dealer, then that's a great deal. If it's from someone from audiogon, for example, it's still a very nice deal. You just need to figure out the value of the warranty and dealer support.

But 20% off new is very good and definitely not normal.

            Hope this helps.

B&W raised price quite a lot in these couple years. i guess ur dealer had those old stocks which they got at pre-inflated price and want to turn those to cash.

are those 800 series? my dealer offered me 15% off across the entire 800 series line and i thought that was good deal.

Yes, 800 series. It`s not old stock. He would have to order out of Buffalo.

20% off of new 800 series is awesome. I would look very hard at that, especially if that means getting to a pair of 802D's.

When I bought my 804's (the new model) here in Vancouver 3 years ago I got 30% off of from the dealer for new non demo speakers..............it sounds like that pricing was pretty exceptional.

Yes that is exceptional. I have never managed more than 20% (usually about 15%).

I got my N804 the soon after the 804s came out. Bought a lot of other stuff, and was able to negotiate them down to about 35% off list. This was at a certain B&W dealer in NYC (there are quite a few there). It was a price that was lower than what they were selling the 703 and the 805S for so I was very happy.

I love my N804 and still can't tell them apart from the newer 804S. Its probably the last piece of my system that will be upgraded (not for atleast 5 more years).

Also, the Red Cherry finish that I have is a far better finish than any of the current finishes imho. You have to see it to believe it.

20% is great but you can do better. I just got my system a couple of months ago. When I started looking 6 months prior to that two dealers that I saw started with 15% off straight off without even going into the pricing. And I knew nothing about speakers then! When I finally bought it came to about 31%. That was huge for me considering what I bought.
Now I am trying to negotiate my rears and the same one will not budge beyond 20%.
The margins are astonishing particularly the higher end ones and gets one thinking how much do they really cost to produce?
In the end 20% is good but these days it can be better particularly if you are in the 800 series. They are awesome BTW.

In terms of dealer margin, I would be surprised if dealer's cost of good sold is more than 50% of the MSRP. In theory, their gross margin should be at least 100% on average.

However, when you factor in rent, labor, utilities, miscellaneous operating expenses and various other overheads, a lot of the gross margin would disappear.

So yes, the 20% discount from MSRP is a pretty good deal.

                                                      Thanks all for this thread.
The saleman at my local dealer offered me 15% off for a pair of 802D's. Then I told him I could only pay $10K + tax but then he shook his head so I walked out.
Am I expected to get only 15% off on Classe stuffs also?
I can get a pair of McIntosh MC501's for $6.5K brand new, tax included.

That`s cool. I had never bought anything used off of the internet before i got mine and was a little nervous, but after alot of back and forth with the seller i felt really comfortable with the purchase and it worked out great.
I got a pair of relatively lightly used dealer demo`s for $8500 + $400 for shipping.

If you change your mind and go for used you can find great deals on agon
