Powering B&W 805 with Old Sony 777ES Reciever

I splurged a little a while back on the speakers, and am not going to be upgrading the amplifier anytime soon since a Rotel RB-180 did not sound very different at normal volumes.

I am wondering is I should switch the Sony 777ES reciever to 4ohms vs 8ohms?

    HI,
Exactly which version of the 805's?

Try it. It won't hurt anything. Since you have a choice of impedances and the receiver is solid state, the choices are there for multiple speaker systems. The amp is not capable of doubling its power at 4 ohms. The choice is there to keep multiple systems from overloading the amp. It's a safety feature and means you have rather underpowered receiver.

But really. You have first class speakers with a mid fi receiver. Why bother? Those speakers will show why good amplification is needed. They will reveal every wart in the entire signal path.

Unless you upgrade your amp I think you wasted your money on the speakers.

Are you using a sub with the 805s? If so, and you use the receiver crossover to do the bass management you should be OK leaving the switch at 8 ohms. If you are running full-range, your probably better off, from a safety standpoint, running the amp at 4 ohms. It will protect the outputs from excessive current draw.

Also, enjoy the speakers and don't worry, the 777 was a good receiver and should make for a very enjoyable system.

        matching speaker impedance to reciever
        by LilBassGuy
I have posted this in a different section, but I think this section is more appropriate, so forgive me for the double post.

I have decided to build one of the many MTM projects I have found on the internet, but I am not sure which ones have a high enough impedance to suit my reciever....

Help, I have fried my Sony 777ES receiver!

Tonight, I was using a test tone CD to evaluate my dual Mission subs. Then suddenly, half way through, my Sony receiver sparked and started flaming....then it went into protection mode. I am pretty sure that there was a short circuit somewhere. Unhooked everything...except the power plug and turned...

        Hello,

I need a nice pair of main left and right speakers for a small mini-home theater I am building. I would rather build a set than buy new.

Adding a power amp to a receiver
        by Andrew Pratt
As more and more people look to upgrade their sound systems people often ask about adding a more powerful amp to their system. Quite often this obsession we like to call our "hobby" leads us on a quest to sonic nirvana. As a group we are frequently upgrading our speakers or source components...

When I returned home today, I turned on the receiver, TV, CD, and VCR via Cinema 7 remote's macro....no sound from any source. Checked all the connections on the back of the receiver...no loose connections. My 1 year old Sony 777ES receiver has been running fine for the past 2.5 months since it was...
