    Bass - Matrix 801 S3 vs 802D

I am considering upgrading my Matrix 801s with a pair of 802Ds. My question is how is the overall bass extension and response compared to the Matrix 801s? I have heard the 800Ds and are ideally what I would like for this particular setup, however this is my secondary system in my bedroom and the room is much too small for them to be optimally positioned. I have listened to N802s in the past, but found the lower bass extension to be quite lacking. I know the new Ds use a new bass driver so hopefully this has been improved. If I can get at least the same bass extension and depth of what I currently have, I think I would be content. These are also part of a surround setup, however I don't use a subwoofer. They will be powered by a pair of McIntosh 501s.

I'm sorry, I do not understand this kind of post. If Matrix 801's are your spare bedroom system, then you probably have listened to alot of speakers. So go listen to your next candidate. You might want to try your current primary speaker in the bedroom (if they fit)
All I want to add is that 75% of bass response depends on speaker positioning and room treatments. You need to consider the room as part of the hifi system.

I suppose my question would be assuming that people have heard them both in similar rooms. Unfortunately, my dealer does not have the 802s in stock, just the 800Ds and 803Ds and several of the lower end B&W line. I could certainly order them and try them at home and swap them for something else if I did not like them, but I just wanted to probe some people here first for their impressions before I did that. Thanks.

As you know, you are comparing apples to oranges.
Matrix 801 uses one 12" while the 802D use two 8" woofers. I have heard both and the Matrix provides deeper bass for sure.
If you are talking about overall bass, the M801 wins. If you are talking about overall quality, the802D wins for sure.

I am considering the same upgrade this year sometime. Going to stick with either the 801D or the 800D. I have already started saving for them. The Matrix 801 S-3 definately has enough bass. I have heard the 802D's/Classe combo, and they are impressive to say the least, but I can assure you from the amount of fellows that have them on this forum, you can't go wrong. I run (2) Velo DD 15's with the Matrix S-3's, and I think I'm just a bass freak, but I like it. :T

Thanks, I wasn't sure if I was ok or not. I don't have the bass alignment filters on the Matrix S-3's, so I went to the next step. It was a step in the right direction, for sure !!!

Does anyone have experience with the B&W bass extension filters for the 800 matrix series? I have 802s and am trying to determine my interest in an ebay offering. Thanks!

I have a nice sized room in my basement 5m x 7m. I can´t decide if I should use my 801 series 80 as front and music, build my own centre using a pair of 12inch from 801s and penguin DM series midrange and tweeter and 805 matrix as rear?? OR Infinity Kappa 8.1/8.2 as front, 2 pairs of Infinity...

How much bass is best for a center channel: 2-way or 3-way?
                by JonW
I’m just starting to think about designs for a center channel speaker. And wondering about how much bass extension is good to have in a center channel speaker for a movie setup. Is crossing to a sub the ideal? In which case you only need to play cleanly down to ~80 Hz. Or might it be best to run...

                Nautilus 801s

I had an opportunity to hear the B & W Nautilus 801s at a local hi fi store this week. My first impressions were that they were very good speakers. Retailed for around 11K I think.

They sure were LARGE. Very formidable appearance. Not sure the look is really up my alley, but I guess...
