    SVS SB12-plus + 800 series?

Just when I thought the sky of options was clearing a bit I came along the SVS SB12-plus :x .

Does anyone have an idea how this sub competes against for instance a Velodyne SPL1000-R/1200-R?

I allready demo-ed the ASW700 at home and I was actually not that impressed, considering it's price. I'm currently demoing the SVS. It is impressive indeed, but I'm very curious about the Velodyne options (hard if not impossible to test at home)...

    Some info:
    Room size: app. 25 m2
    System: Rotel gear powering B&W 805S + HTM4S
    HT/music ratio: 40/60

Someone care to share his/her thoughts? Thank you and offcourse Best wishes for the new year to everyone!

I'm using the PB12 Ultra/2 with 802Ds, HTM1D, and 804Ss for surround. I think it produces an excellent sound. I have never heard a system with a Velodyne but I've heard they are extremely good SWs. The problem with them is that they are also way more expensive than the SVSs.

isn't the 802D spectacularly priced compared to ANY velodyne? (except the 1812)

I suppose it's just a question of on which part of your sound system you want to focus your spending.

what type of music do you listen to jack d?

if lets say majority is in the classical/jazz department ... you should really take a look at the Velodyne DD series. it will match your speakers extremely well ... and the built in PEQ will pay for itself.

btw, I have the Velodyne DLS-5000R, Axiom EP500 (single driver rival of the SVS ultra), and the Velodyne DD-18

I listen mostly to jazz. So you have your Velodyne connected to the amp via the speaker level connections or do connect it to your preamp via coax?

the DD subwoofer is connected to the LFE coaxial cable ...

it has incredible distortion control, you're NOT gonna be hearing the boom we normally hear with lesser subs, at first I wasn't comfortable without the boom (I like the boom sound in Hotel California intro - DTS)

for movies though, you might still need your SVS (i'm keeping my axiom as a couch shaker)

                I have a related question.

I have the option of buying a used SVS PC-Ultra subwoofer for a very nice price. My fronts are Nautilus 802. Is there really any need for a sub with these fronts? The N802 go all the way down to 27 Hz (-6 dB). My listening room is about 10 ft X 24 ft.

                  how nice a price?

                  where? just kidding.

anyway, for the money the ultra has gotten good reviews for music SQ ... but of course, there are better options for music

This is always going to be a hot debate, and you will most likely get answers on both sides.

I have the 803S's and the SVS PB12-Plus/2 - I will be upgrading to the 802Ds in March FWIW.

I never use a sub with my mains, as I don't want any post processing of the signal after my best DAC, again in my system. In my case, my CD player has better DACs than my Receiver/Processor.

I only use the Sub for HT, TV, PS2, etc - but when I listen to Stereo it is strictly Source-Pre-Amp-Speaker. Again, this is all opinion - and this is mine of course! :B

                    Cheers,
                    Keith

400 bucks is a really really good price, I'd get it just because it's a good price.

of course you have to confirm if the item is in good condition.

I totally agree, which is why I have my sub connected to the Pre L+R outputs and I get to use the sub. For movies, I have my sub set to None and L+R set to Large, so the .1 LFE channel gets routed to the fronts. I care more about 2-ch than movies so this compromise works for me (until I get a second sub just for HT )

I am not sure this is an optimum setup for movies (IMHO). For example, I experimented a while with not using a center channel for movies, all the center sounds were being routed to my fronts (Nautilus 802). However, when I added an HTM2 (a far lesser speaker) as my center channel, dialogs improved quite a bit.

I have a feeling that most processors do not do a very good job of mixing channels (either sending the center for the L/R or the sub to L/R). As a result, I feel you will get far better results using a separate .1 LFE channel rather than asking your processor to mix it to the fronts then using another crossover in your sub to separate it back.

Also, the same bass information in being sent to your fronts and the sub. Unless you set your sub crossover such that it only reproduces the frequencies that your fronts cannot, you will probably get some weird sounding bass (since both the sub and fronts are producing the same bass).

                            Just my 2 cents.
