Surround position??

Hi all,
I have just renovated my HT room and this has given me more space at the back of the room.

Now - opinions please - I am only running 5.1 and do not intend to go to 7.1 at least in the foreseeable future.

I've got 800Ds at the front with only a little toe-in and 802s at the rear and my new HT seating puts my ears almost directly on a level with the mid range phase plug.

Where should my surrounds go - at the side in line with my ears, or slightly to the back at an angle facing forwards??

If you listen to multi-channel music in addition to HT, you're probably best placing them in the rear of the room, with the speakers angled in toward your listening position.

Being you have 802s for surrounds i would put them back a bit further then 90 from center. I would start in the 120 deg range and move them around from there. Hey they are only 802s, easy to move around right? :lol:

With some bi poles the positon would vary, from my understand (correct me if im wrong) you would want them closer to 90 degs and above seating position a few feet.

well, i would try both, i am doing 7.1, i found that the surrounds on the side sound better in my room,i tried behind to the side first, but i am using 805S's and not bad boy 802's, so not sure what difference that will make, also i have mine set to small, and i assume you will leave yours on large

let us know how it works out

I sat yesterday and placed my 802 Surrounds in various positions as recommended in the DOLBY article that was posted.

Eventually after much heaving and straining I found a position at about 110 degrees from the side of my ears where the sound was more natural and more like the reverberations and reflections you get at a concert.

At the 90 degree position the sound ves very unnatural.

At the 120degree+ positions the sound was too much to the rear - in fact on some discs I found myself almost looking over my shoulder to find where the sound was coming from.

So thank to those who replied for your advice - I settled on the best position for my ears. :T

By the way - I have to say that probably the biggest improvement to the sound was my new seating which raised my body a good 6 inches higher and put my ears on more of a level with the phase plug in the FST unit.

For MANY YEARS - I have been sitting TOO LOW. 8O

Any one else found this???
