    603 S3 clipping

    Hi guys,
Long time browser, first time poster.

I have 3 speakers in my setup powered by an Adcom Gfa-6000 5 channel amp. 2 603 S3s and an LCR600. The speakers are set to large on my processor, as I don't have a sub yet.

I was watching a move a few nights ago at a fairly high volume and for the first time I heard what "clipping" sounds like coming from the right speaker. I realize that I was probably overdriving my amp and that I should buy a sub soon.

I am really worried about possible speaker damage on that speaker, the speaker sounds fine, but I can't be sure. I opened up the grill and everything looks ok. Are there any tests I can to do to make sure that the tweeter or something inside wasn't damaged in order to ease my mind? Is there a way to test just the tweeters?

    Thanks. :T

I have blown a few speakers in my time mainly too drunk at a party and over driving the speakers or amp

I you have damaged the speaker you would know about it.

When a amp clips it send a massive spike of power thought the speakers and cooks the voice coil.
This is usally happens right a way and you either hear very harsh crakling sound from the given speaker driver or nothing at all.

I have a voice coil from a Klipsch 15" driver hertiage somewear around that was blown from from a amp cliping it just a bundle of cooked wire...again too drunk having a party and over pushing the amp.

So if you are still hearing the sound you used to then I think it would be safe to say your speakers are fine.

    Hope this helps :T

I heard the harsh crackling sound during the movie, but i'm still not sure if its damaged.

I never really put my ear near the speaker to listen to the tweeter previously, but when I do now I do hear SOMETHING from the tweeter, usually it is hiss from the recording, but most vocals seem to come from the midrange. If I am getting hiss from the tweeters is that a sure sign all is well? Are drivers either a broken or not broken type of thing?

See if you can get a copy of Pink Floyd-Time
The bells at the start of the track sound real from both speakers then all is well

If they sound muffeld like it is coming only from the midrange then you have a problem but I think all should be fine

Try that track and it should be a sure fire way of telling

                Hey baller

Relax. Put your ears right up to the tweeter and you'll probably hear a bit of hiss, and vocals do (mostly) come out of the midrange drivers. Play something familiar and try to relax enough not to hear imagined "damage" and I'm sure you'll hear that all is well. I know it can be stressful to think you've damaged your gear, probably many have been in that position only to find out there wasn't any damage at all.

If the speaker was "blown" you'd know all about it. If the speaker is playing normally, it's fine. Try and play your system within realistic limits in future though. Unless your speakers have a death wish. :W

Answer to the original question: Most damaged drivers simply stop working altogether (blown). Listen to music at a moderate level if there is no unusual crackling or other wierd noises your speaker should be fine. As to the source of "clipping" There is no surge of power, quite the opposite, the amp is unable to supply the necessary power to complete the sound wave, that leads not only to severe harmonic distortion, but also to a sudden and non sine wave movement of the cone. That is what blows the speaker.

I've got the upgrade bug, but very limited funds and I thought of one that's definitely within budget, but was wondering how practical it is. I'm currently running 601 s3's as my mains. Now under most circumstances, I'm sure everyone would chime in that those are not enough speaker to be used as mains...however,...

Well, folks, one of our forum sponsers has added a very interesting new product series for those who like to build their own speakers, but don't like all the work, or the sometimes amateur looking cosmetics.

Even I'm going to try a set of these, for the replacement project for my daughter......

Looking for a HT system for a relatively small living room. The listen area is 12X11, with the kitchen and walk way adding another 12X10 to the right side. Music/video 50:50

I think I would get a Rotel 1056 and a pair of 601s as rear speakers. Was wondering should I pick 602 or 602.5...
