What is the purpose of metal round plug in 804s?

    Folks,

What is the purpose of that metal plug in the back of 804S ? I could not find anything in the manual.

    Thank you

That metal plug is actually a giant tension nut that holds the FST driver in place, it is attached to a rod that threads into the back of the FST driver and pulls the driver into the cabinet from behind, it is actually torqued to spec by B&W.

Yes, B&W uses a different way of mounting the midrange (FST) to "decouple" it from the enclosure. If you go to the B&W website and look under "Technologies" you can read about decoupling (which has a nice exploded view of the Marlan enclosure + drivers) and the FST midrange technology.

A buddy of mine who used to be a B&W dealer actually saw a FST driver fall out of a Nautilus speaker because something messed up with the plug. He said he almost cried when the little parts and pieces went rolling out :E

No, those are set at a factory torque spec, messing with it could actually cause the response of that driver to change.

Speaking about the tension nut, B&W mentions something about a locking mechanism that is used to keep the nut in place during transit. It is suppose to be removed by the dealer but my dealer does not open new product and I have never seen it. Has anyone else? Perhaps it is removed prior to hitting the dealer's showroom floor?

B&W goes on to say that removing the locking device may losen the tension nut making it necessary to be re-adjusted? Has anyone experienced this as well?

                Guys,

I am confused. Please help me out here. I just opened boxes my brand new 804S. Should I do anything with those metal plugs in the back of my speakers?

Cooldmitriy, are there paper tags hanging from them? If not just leave them alone. Maybe you could upload a picture of them to see if they have the transport screws in them.

My 802s had a washer (about 1" in diameter) and a screw attaching it to the metal plug.

Does the 703 have the same nut for the FST driver?? I've never noticed anything at the back of the speakers, but i can't say i've gone looking for it, even tho these are at the top of my list when i next upgrade...

The 703's don't have them (well, not visible). I guess the cabinet is big enough so they are hidden inside, or the FST isn't the same at all...

BTW, because of the FST, the 703's (and 800 series) need a very good amp, a lot better than for the 704 or 600 series. A 1k$ amp just doesn't sound right with them.

                                Phase Plug

A phase plug is a stationary structure placed at the center of the loudspeaker driver's diaphragm, just in front of the voice coil. It is typically a cylindrical or conical-shaped object made of materials like plastic, metal, or wood. The phase plug's design may vary depending on the specific driver and its intended application. Its primary purpose is to improve the driver's performance by addressing issues related to phase cancellation and dispersion. The function of the...

I did recently buy a 2 yrs old HTM1D to my 800-series setup. It's a great speaker and the sound of it is brilliant!

Yesterday I decided to tighten the diamond tweeter house on top of the Marlan head, this because it was very loose compared to the tweeter house on top of my 802D's. I know...

                                Hi all,

I'm a little worried about the FST midrange drive units in my demo 804's which I recently purchased and I was hoping someone out here could help me:
                                1. The plug in my FST midrange is not perfectly centred / is not located in the middle of the black ring. The distance between

                                Htm3s + ((804s + Asw825) Or 803s)?

I am trying to decide which is the better option
                                1. HTM3S + 804S + ASW825
                                2. HTM3S + 803S

The price is similar (a little more for option 1), and I know option 2 could be upgraded in the future with the ASW825, but I have to limit myself a little.

Hey guys, I hada question regarding the FST drivers in the B&W series. Is the driver identical across the whole range. If it is, then should the midrange sound similar across the range, if not, then what makes the midrange different across the range. The reason why I ask this is because I currently...
