    Keeping it Clean

What do you do to keep you speakers cabinets clean? What do you use to polish the wood and keep it nice and shiny?

Has anyone tried using a wax or polish?

It depends what type of cabinet you have. You would use a different product for different surfaces. Cherrywood breathes so you can use a "wax" type nurishing product to keep the wood healthy and from drying out. If you have a lacquer finish or you have 802 801 or 800 with the lacquered top you want ot use a product that is not a wax in base as a lacquered finish does not absord.

I have a special product I use on the heads of my 802D's for the lacquered tops that is the same product `I use on my Steinway piano which has a black lacquered finish. You definitely do not want to use anyting "alchohol" based on either wood finish and definitely not a lacquer surface as this will dry out and "crack" eventually. Avoid window cleaning products. Use common sense, and you can always ask someone in woodworking cabinetry for advice. The heads of the 802 series are actually painted with lacquer rather than plastic so pay attention.

My new 804S will be arriving next week
Do you recall the N800's, the rosenut used to have a realllllllly smooth finish not like the ones today. The finish today is more like the CDM series.

Old N800 was actually red cherry.

I'm a bit concerned with the new rosenut finish. If it's like the 700, then it would be ok. Nice and smooth... similar to a REL Rosenut. However, the demo versions of the new 800 series my dealer has has a very rough and ugly finish. I'm a bit tentative in purchasing them. I noticed the rough finish on 803S, 804S, but not on the 802D. All the cherry finishes are smooth... it's only the Rosenut I noticed this on. I saw some "grains" as deep as 1/8" (or even more) and 1/8" wide (possibly wider). I thought this was very unbecoming of a "high end finish."

Can any owners of the new Rosenut with either the 804 or 803 confirm this? It seems like the 802 got special treatment, or all the best veneers... and the 803 and 804 got all the crap... but hopefully maybe this is just for the 1st batch and B&W will improve on future batches.

jlee, I have casually noticed similar differences in appearances between the 802D and the 803S in rosenut finish. Even so, I seriously doubt that B&W is using cheaper veneers on the lower end of the 800's. Perhaps they are using a different staining and laquering process. I also believe the rosenut and blackash finishes use oak veneers which has a naturally grainy texture where as the cherry finishes uses a cherry veneer which has a mostly smooth texture.

Ok so the rosenut is not rosenut veneer, but oak or whatever?

Correct. Rosenut and black ash are stains not veneers. Veneers are usually made from cherry, mahogany, maple, red oak, walnut, and white ash woods.

For my Nautilus 804s and 805s, I use a dusting cloth with an aerosol dust cleaner. I spray into the cloth and apply. Never spray directly. I use regular furniture wax only once or twice a year.

I keep it simple - plain old water and a microfibre cloth. Spray a bit of water onto the cloth and wipe gently but firmly. Works well for me!

There are also other factors to consider like, the climate where you live. If you are in Arizona, then you need to put more wax, than Seattle wher it rains 300+ days a year. Does it get direct sunlight, near a door window to the outside, fishtank, kitchen etc. How much you have to clean and what products to use.

I use a nourishing cleaner that has wax in it once a month on cherrywood veneer.

All fine furniture use veneer finishes. Even $100,000 Steinway piano, where they actually grow their own trees in their own forest, use veneers.

That is so f$cking cool if that's true! That made my day... I love that... make your own forest, harvest your own trees, make pianos from them... gotta love it.

Right, but the 802D is still Rosenut, not a cherry veneer. It is still oak stained with Rosenut, but it is smoother than the 804S and 803S. In fact, I have a set of 705, and it's Rosenut... very smooth! Basically just like the 802D...

Can anybody confirm if the staining and lacquering process is different? If so, I find this unacceptable for a high end product. It's so "un-B&W-like"

Yeah, They make everyting "in house". Not only that they own tons of patents on innovations in piano. The very first piano with a steel frame.

They grow thier own forests, pick the best trees, let the trees age, cut the wood and bend them in a process, then leave them sit for several years in an "aging room" before they go back and apply the "veneers" and do the installation.

EVERYTHING on a Steinway piano is made by them. Every element be it metal or wood, that goes into the piano is manufactured by them.

It is the only piano in the world that can boast that everything is Steinway.

And the sounds that come out of one are worth every penny.

I'd rather listen to my son play the piano than anything else I can think of (besides sex).!! :T

Before I get carried away testing and making a miliion samples, whats everyones thoughts on the best finish for a Maple Veneer? Thus far I am thinking of sealing the veneer with a "SealCoat" from Zinsser, and then a generic lacquer, 4 or 5 layers and then hand rubber...

I'm curious what lacquer based sanding sealer people are using these days to apply a black lacquer finish to MDF. I need to be able to source it in Canada as well. This info was taken from ShopBot forum from a very experienced MDF cabinet maker.

I've got a bit of time at home at the moment, so thought I do a little project. I've built a few subs in years gone by, but never done full range speakers, never finished with veneer or even had a router. So a bit of reading around here and I decided to do a 5.1 system using the Overnight Sensations...
