    Speaker upgrade to B&W

    Hi everybody!!

I have a Rotel RX-1052 stereo receiver and RCD-1072 cd player with SilverCats interconnects, all of these connected to my JBL E60 three-way floor standing speakers through Monster Speaker cables. It sounds good to me, but everybody says that my JBL speakers are my weakest point in my dedicated 2-channel system.

I am thinking on upgrading my speakers to B&Ws, and am considering DM603 - S3, DM604 S3, CM 4, CM 6, and 704 models, all in my price range (up to $2000 per pair). I mostly listen to hard rock/heavy metal music. I care a lot for good crisp highs and clear mids, with male vocals.

    Any suggestions please!!

I am willing to consider other brands as well.

Not to sound trite but, if you like your JBLs then why change just because others say they are your weak link? If you've grown tired of them or are looking for a different sound then, you should start looking.

That said, you should go listen to some of the B&W models that you've mentioned and see what you think. I must admit that I don't listen to hard rock/heavy metal often but, think that you might find the B&Ws a bit polite for your taste. Others with B&W and rock/metal experience feel free to chime in here. Who knows? B&Ws may be to your liking.

Just for the heck of it, you might want to give Klipsch a listen, those horns will deliver the "good crisp highs and clear mids" that you're after or, a larger set of JBLs. Also, if you get the chance you should take a listen to Dynaudio speakers which are great. Paradigm may also deliver what you're seeking.

Most of all take some time and shop around to make sure that you get what sounds best to YOU.

IMHO, I would only recommend the Nautilus or 700 series for any type of rock music. The 600 series just doesn't quite cut it for me, "polite" is a good word.

I would definately recommend listening to Paradigm/Klipsch/Boston Accoustics/.....etc. To make sure you are buying a speaker you enjoy for ALL types of music.

I concur with the other posts. A vital lesson to learn in this hobby, please yourself, not others! It doesn't hurt to look around, but if you are happy, don't change anything hastily.

Thank you all, guys, for the advise, I appreciate it! A good lesson learned for B&W being "polite". I will definitely audition B&Ws and Boston Accoustics at my local M-Y, and try to find display rooms for the other brands.

You won't get a better rock music speaker than JBL.

Years ago I had the JBL 6311B studio monitors as my Hi Fi setup, (MANY YEARS AGO!!).

I was sorry to see them go.

              by Bob
The last couple of years I have been trying to trace the origins of rock and roll and gathering up the "essential" albums while they can still be found.
Mostly I had worked my way back through the roots in the blues and gospel. The past few months I have been working my way back to...

              Rock speakers V's Classical speaker
              by bleeding ears
Hi all, I am seeking an explanation of what exactly makes a speaker a
good speaker for classical music, compared with a speaker that is good with
              rock music.

Eg are particular brands designed only for classical music and others only
              for rock music?

Just wondering which B&W speakers you own or have owned that you consider the best for rock.I own the 683's and a lot has been been posted about them not being very good speakers to which I totally disagree. They are very revealing and do exceptionally well for jazz and classical music. And also do...

"Rumble, The Best of Link Wray"
              by Bob
If you don't know who Link Wray is, here is part of the bio from the All Music Guide website:

Link Wray may never get into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, but his contribution to the language of rockin' guitar would still be a major one, even if he had never walked into another studio...
