    Thrift store finds

Found these two in a thrift store earlier, curious to know if they're worth anything and just thought it was neat to see some old school "hi fi" stype stuff.

    Both V nice pieces.

From a time when receivers came with V good quality phono pre's.

The Yamaha, especially, would be interesting to try out with a good TT.

I thought the $150 they have on each of those seemed pretty steep for a thrift store. What do you guys think?

Those are both nice pieces, $150 is high for TS prices. I found a NAD receiver a few months back at Goodwill for $8. I stepped off into vintage gear this year and it is addicting.

Man it used to be those thrift stores had policies about pricing things, like nothing over 50-100 bucks or something. At least that's how it was when I was growing up. I don't think I'd pay 150 bucks for electronics from a thrift store. That Yamaha looks quite nice though.

The good old days, when they used real watts, and put quality tuners and amps in receivers as well.

I miss those days. Music was better back then too.

I just inherited it's little brother when my dad passed away. I believe it has 20 watts/channel and I'm pretty pleased with it as my shop stereo.

                          Don't worry, it's a very clean shop.

Bill, I think Dan said he got it's "little brother", so think he wasn't referring to the CR-2020's specs.

Still debating whether to go back and make some lowball offer on it!

Anyone have opinions on that NAD?

                                quoted from the link

Bigger sibling to the CR-1020 bestseller and bestseller itself, the CR-2020 nevertheless was the small sibling of the CR-3020.

The latter didn't sell so well so the CR-2020 can be seen as the right combination of high, wide, good & beautiful without being overdone.

Added from the CR-1020 are a an IC-based MC stage, 2-step turnover tone controls, 2-step FM muting, a 4-gang volume attenuator, three more discrete LEDs for FM Blend / Tone / Muting functions and more power with just as little distortion.

Nothing wrong with the NAD. A mid-level British brand that began in the early '70's. Typical of the British audio manufactures of that time, its 'house sound' is on the mellow side with rolled off HF and smoother, 'valve' character, focusing on mid frequency accuracy.

As with any 'vintage' gear, good sounds are possible with the obvious caveats. Regardless of the # of hours of use, components like capacitors & such age & deteriorate with time. Refurbishment is not rocket science, but finding a reputable & trustworthy technician can be problematic if one is not capable of performing the restoration themselves.

My most prized possession is my Carver C-19 tube hybrid pre amp. It is over 25 years old, but still the match of any new unit in the over $2K range offered today. My great fortune is having a local shop that was able to refurbish & modify the unit to better than new condition for a V reasonable fee.

I would say you did very well. Bluebook prices on the NAD and Yamaha are $360.00 and $310.00 respectively.

Never, ever, have I found a deal like that before.

I came across a store in my little corner of Ontario that sold the Rotel line. I auditioned the RSX 1055 and fell in love! The only problem I currently have is that I JUST purchased the above mentioned Yamaha in December. I have to admit although I did enjoy the sound...
