Any Experiece with the Philips DVD 711 ?

Another contender:

Samsung's DVD-711

Is the model # just coincidence?

Still staying within my thin budget, this one is running $199 also. It has all the same features as the Philips, except the Samsung plays MP3's too!

Any info on either of these units is greatly appreciated,

Tom IMO I'd buy a Pioneer 333 over either of the two you've listed. Try Pioneer 333 price quote for some cheap prices on this model. It will do CDR and is a known performer. PS I'd buy it from etronics since I've read several very good things about them where the other companies are ???

I have no info on either unit however, most folks that own Phillips units seem to be surprised with the performance. I have only read of a few people that were not satisfied across the board. It appears to be one of those love or hate things.

Hey Andrew,

Thanks for the suggestion. After reviewing the Pioneer, It's definitely moved up to #1 on my list so far. Looks nice, features are there, and I'm sure build quality will be above the others.

No MP3 support, but thats why I have my PC hooked up to my receiver

Any others you feel I should consider? I was looking at or below $249 .........

From what I've seen on the Apex MP3 support is limited at best and isn't that user friendly so it wouldn't be a deal breaker in my book. If CDR support is a must have then the Pioneer would be my first (and pretty much) only choice. If you didn't need CDR support then I'd seriously consider the Panasonic A320 (or RV60) A320 I'm not sure if you've read all the glowing accolades the A320 got but its often stated that it has the best image in sub $1k players out there (also happens to be the one I own!)

Unfortunately CDR is a must right now because My DVD player pulls double-duty as a CD player too; and since I just installed a CD-RW drive, I would really like to be able to play CDR's through my home system without using the computer.

The MP3 support is not a decision maker though. If it has it -- cool, if not -- no big deal.

So all-in-all, if the Pioneer is going to be the best quality unit I can get, under $250, with CDR support, then I'll be placing my order tomorrow.

Not that it will likely matter much but most DVD players can play CDRW's but not CDR's unless they have either dual lasers or one that can adjust it self (not publically of course!) The Pioneer 333 is a very solid player with a nice image thats sharp and has great downconversion. Its only beefs is its remote (on the small side) and its a little louder then some of the other models (was pretty loud on the Pioneer 525 that it replaced) otherwise its a great player

Don't you mean if a player will play CDR's doesn't mean it will play CDRW's? and not the other way around?

CDRW playback is not a must at home, just CDR. I use the re-writable discs mainly for tunes in my car, and transporting files back and forth to work.

As far as the remote goes, I've got a Home Theater Master SL-9000 that I really love, so I could care less about that. Maybe I'll take a cruise to the HT shop and check one out (if they have one in stock) to see how loud it is.

Not sure how to interpret your comments...irregardless of CDR compatibility in DVD players, most players can read CDRW's since the lenght of the laser used to read DVD's is pretty close to that of CDRW's. In order for DVD players to read CDR's they need to either have two lasers, one optimized for CD and CDR and another for CDRW and DVD. Some players have a single laser but they adjust the laser to read CDR's which I think is the case for Pioneer.

Oh, ok. I think I understand what you're telling me now:

I assumed that if a player will read CDRWs (Compact Disc Re-Writable) then it should read a CDR (Compact Disc Recordable). I thought that if the laser was fine enough, then it would be backwards compatable.

What your saying is that the CDRW and DVD formats are read by the same type of laser as is the CD and CDR formats.

Did I get this right?

If so, could I then assume the reason some players won't read CDRs is due to the pickup used by the player?
I know the older CDrom drives in computers won't read burned CDRs because not enough of the laser is reflected back to the pickup for the read head's (or whatever it's called) minimum requirement.
But with a pressed CD, the reflective properties of the CD are retained and allow more of the laser to be reflected back.

Is this correct? and if so, could you effectivly replace the pickup/lense of a non-CDR compatable player with one that is compatable?

I know, a far stretch here ---- not that I would go ripping pieces out of my new DVD player ---- I'm just curious now more then anything ...........

Just to seal the deal, if you read the review on my Elite DV-07, you will see that the Elite has the best picture IMO, of all the players I own, and that is 5. Why on earth would anyone own 5 DVD players? lol. I have no idea what to tell you but that I need help! Actually, 1 is S7000, and it started freezing on dual layer discs, so now it's really a dedicated CD transport. One is the megachanger, and well, of course, it's a keeper. One is a Toshiba 9000, last TOL player before the 9200. I bought it to replace the Sony about a month before I bought the DV-07. It's my first quality single player. One is a Panasonic portable, and one is a A110 which just got left out when the Toshiba came, lol. The A110 is not hooked up.

So, out of all those players, though the Pioneer is a later generation than all, it's still got the best picture.

Toshiba won't play CD-Rs, FYI.

Tom you got it all straight now

I guess it might be possible to swap lasers but it would be a lot more work then just swapping the player for a new model. Don't forget the newer models will also have newer firmware, component outs and a host of other "features" not found on early players.

Alright, thanks guys. Today is the day I place an order for something and so far it looks like the Pioneer 333 is on top.

Lex, what's with your A110? will it play CDR's? and if so, are you interested in selling it?
Just a thought here.....I need a DVD player......you're not using your A110

Yea, I understand the swapping out parts thing. It's just those types of questions that help me have a more complete understanding on how everything is working inside these devices.
I guess I'm just curious by nature.
