I know there are still a few days for releases at the box office but, what was the best movie you saw all year? Also, what was the worst?

LOL Lex how many years ago did Braveheart win Best Picture and Director?
But I did enjoy Gibson In "the Patriot"
This had to be the worst year I remember for Films ever and I didnt see much that really knocked my socks off
the worst I saw in theaters was MI:2 or gone in 60 seconds or Red Planet or, or or,
With the prices and quality my New Years resolution is to just wait to see it on DVD and have better sound and picture anyway and maybe save $50

i think that the best movie i've seen this year is "crouching tiger, hidden dragon." while in l.a. i've seen it twice. who knows when it'll come to winnipeg...
and i'd have to say that the worst movie i've seen this year is "mission to mars." what the hell happened to da palma? and how could so many good actors sign on to that movie? i've got a better name for it... "exposition to mars."Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes.

In terms of being a great movie, it probably is pretty low on the list.
But The Perfect Storm, in the Premium Cinema in Natick, MA. got my adrenaline running like no movie has in a long long time.
I suspect most of that comes from being able to relate to the fear, but whatever, it did it for me.

Almost Famous is probably my #1 thus far. Unbreakable was great too but not quite as approachable for most.
I'm still looking forward to seeing:
Requiem For A Dream
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Thirteen Days
Castaway
I think it would be premature to pick an Oscar favorite until I've seen them all.

I really look forward to Castaway. Can't say if I will see at theater or wait for DVD. Don't you guys almost feel loss to go to the theater? I mean, you totally screw up the DVD premier!!! I guess if I was dating someone I would tend to do this a lot more. But as a freewheeling bachelor, I usually choose to premier the DVD. I figure the money I saved by not going to the theater pays for at least half of the DVD.
Also, the new one with Hunt and Gibson should be interesting as I like both those actors. Who can't like Helen? :B

Lex...being bach sure calculates different from being a family guy. Up here admission is around $8.50 per person, so after popcorn, twizzlers, the theater sized Coffee crisp (chocolate bar for my american friends) and drinks, this generally works out to $40 for me.
The DVD premier is a bargin :B
Excellent point though, I to am one of those that waits for the DVD Prem, unless it's a show I absolutely have to see in the theater

Cast Away is entertaining, I especially liked all the scenes building up to the island. Well worth seeing in the theater.
Personally, as much as I like my HT I still prefer the local theaters better. I like seeing movies with a crowd on the big screen and the smells of a theater, not to mention the trailers. My wife and I go to matinees, they are usually only $3.50, about the same as a rental.
Besides, right now most of the theaters in LA are running one of the LA Times commercials that I have a small part in. And, what the heck, it is fun seeing yourself on the big screen.- Bottom

So far, I'm going to vote for The Patriot, but, I've got to agree with Buzz about The Perfect Storm. I couldn't take my eyes away from the screen for what seemed like almost an hour and I didn't see it at one of our fancy theaters...... I saw it on my HT setup with...... yep, my 20" TV!!! So, that has to say something at least about the musical score and sound effects, as well as the filming. I can't imagine what the movie would have been like if I'd had a decent sized screen.
Question: Is a person actually allowed to call themselves a Home Theater Enthusiast if their screen is only 20"????
Just wonderin........
Greg.

My favorites are an odd combo of The X-Men and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The first I waited for my whole life, the second caught me completely by surprise.

I think I have to give this one to Gladiator. There really haven't been any good movies this year. The only other ones I enjoyed much were X-men, Unbreakable, and The Patriot. I still have a few left to see before the year is over, but I don't expect anything to top Gladiator.- Bottom

I'll have to agree with Bing on that Magnolia thing, worst movie I've seen in a while.
As for the best I'd have to say I can't remember a recent movie I enjoyed more than Chicken Run. I got The Patriot for christmas and enjoyed it but I'm going to have to buy Chicken Run. There are several I havent seen yet Gladiator and X-Men. I watched the documentary on The Perfect Storm on Discovery or some such before I saw the movie boy was that a mistake. Still a good movie but ruined a lot of the suspense for me.

Like Robbie, I haven't seen most of the big hitters this year with the exception of Gladiator. My vote is slightly bias (lack of seeing most blockbusters) but, IMO Gladiator would be an easy top ten of all time contender!

I'm moving my list over from the directors forum.
This has been a very weak year for film, then suddenly this weekend there has been an explosion of great films. My favorites so far, with any of the first three worth seeing twice:
Traffic
Eirin Brokovich
O Brother, Where Art Thou
Before Night Falls
Nowhere To Hide
Gladiator
Wonder Boys
Chocolate
Chicken Run
Quills- Bottom

Can't single out one, because this year has been rather thin but here are some of my favourites (in no particular order):
Requiem for a Dream
You Can Count on Me
Traffic
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Quills
Wonder Boys
Gladiator, X-men (entertainment value! )- Bottom

Why have these elaborate sound/visual systems to pick a "best" movie of the year, only to have the movie a great one (without any explosive sountrack), or a DD/DTS blockbuster without any plot what-so-ever.
If we are to pick the "best" movie, the picture and sound should go hand-in-hand. U-571 gets my vote. This movie does evrything to my 7.1 rig that made me fall for surr sound in the first place. Move aside SPR/DTS, there's a new sheriff in town...
