If this badboy comes out with a MSRP of $500 or so, then Denon, Marantz etc better get prepared for sales of their overpriced wares to instantly vanish. Seriously, who would buy a $2000 Denon or Marantz player now with this on the horizon?

I think they said 599 before. Also apparently it's not guaranteed to play DVD-A yet.

Still a hell of a price. My former player, a Denon transport is $1K retail. This player smokes it in every regard for almost half the price.

It looks like prices have come down about $100 from the MSRPs announced at conventions this year, so I think a $499 price might be possible. It will still be $200 or so higher than a similar Sony or Panny, but if you need a true universal player, it might be worth the cost.

If Oppo is smart they will price it like the Sony BDP-S550 and the Panasonic 55K on Sale ant Amazon for $329 .

Otherwise they won't get much market share :B

Also who cares if it doesn't do DVD-Audio that format was buried a long time ago. At least SACD has over 5000 + title and still new releases for classical lovers

I love my PS3, but I still would rather have a single player to play all my Blu-ray and DVDs from both Region 1 & 2. So if it's able to upscale DVDs as well as their DVD players, then I'm in.

I had the Denon, but I sold it recently. No one has tested the Oppo. I'm obviously going off specs. The Denon was just a transport, a fine machine in it's own regard, but it's almost double the price of the Oppo, which makes the Oppo already better on paper. Toss in BD profile 2.0, SACD, DSD over HDMI, internal decoding of HBR codecs etc. Then you have a winner on your hands. I have no reason to doubt Oppo, they have an excellent track record and have proven themselves to be competent with universal players.

New SACD non-classical releases are also continuing to be issued.

Thankfully, SACD is not dead yet!

Yes, and I have been looking at the Sony SCD-XA5400ES.

I rent 90% of my blu ray movies and I try to use a player exclusively for rented movies. The problem with rented movies is that people usually treat them poorly and the movies often are full of scratches and gook.

So for my SACD collection about 70 now I like to use a different source.:T

                                  Some details (not verbatim):

The BDP-83 is in beta testing. The current version is Profile 1.1, supports SACD with PCM or DSD over HDMI and DSD DACs :B . It includes the ABT VRS scaler in their flagship DVD player. It is bitstream only for HD codecs. They fully intend on a true universal player with Profile 2.0 with in-player decoding of all HD codecs, and DVD-Audio :B . They are considering an early adopter program starting later this month, early next month. Pricing would be $499 to $599.

Pricey, but if you want everything (other than HD-DVD ) in one player, it's not outrageous especially with DSD DACs and VRS scaling.

OPPO BDP-83 Blu-Ray Disc Player Update

                                    Dear Bill,

Thank you for signing up to receive information about our upcoming OPPO BDP-83 Blu-ray Disc Player. We appreciate your interest, and would like to update you on the current development status of this exciting new product.

One of the major design goals for the BDP-83 is to deliver first-class video quality for both Blu-ray and DVD. We based and expanded upon our top-of-the-line DV-983H up-converting DVD player and fully utilize the unparalleled performance of the VRS by Anchor Bay video processing solution. You can expect all the high-end video features including Source Direct for DVD and Blu-ray, high definition HDMI scaling, Edge and Detail Enhancement options, and 1080p24Hz output for both Blu-ray and DVD.

We did not stop at just video performance. We further refined the audio stage, including the addition of discrete stereo outputs and increasing the power and efficiency of the power supply. For SACD playback, the BDP-83 supports direct DSD over HDMI and DSD-to-analog without any PCM conversion, a very unique feature.

With the BDP-83, we intend to release a full-featured universal Blu-ray Disc player that supports BD Profile 2.0 (BD-Live), DVD, SACD, DVD-Audio, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD Master Audio.

As of this writing, the BDP-83 supports BD Profile 1.1 (BONUSVIEW), DVD-Video, SACD, and bitstreaming of Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. Progress is being made on a daily basis as our engineers work diligently around the clock to further enable DVD-Audio, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio onboard decoding, and BD Profile 2.0.

The BDP-83 is currently undergoing an extensive and thorough Beta Test Program. We greatly appreciate all the feedback from our beta testers, as without their hard work and extraordinary attention to detail, the BDP-83 would not be the high quality product that our customers have come to expect from us.

As many of our customers eagerly anticipate the release of the BDP83, we are contemplating a "BDP-83 Early Adoption Program" in late December or early January. This program will make available a limited number of units so you can purchase and experience the current implementation of the BDP-83's feature set, with the ability to download firmware as new features become available. The estimated price for the BDP-83 is around $499 to $599.

OPPO Digital is a consumer-oriented company that listens carefully to customer opinions and values their feedback. If it were not for our customers' feedback and support, OPPO would not be where we are today. At OPPO we strive to provide our customers with quality products reinforced by exceptional customer service."

Sure hope it is $499, sound should be outstanding :T

Denon Universal Blu Ray Player DVDA1-UDCI

Denon Universal Blu Ray Player DVDA1-UDCI
But not for the likes of us antipodeans just yet ... this is the Blu Ray Player that matches the AVPA1 Pre and Power and is the multiformat device that will properly supercede the DVDA1 DVD Player.

To be released in overseas markets in the first quarter of this year, the DVDA1_UDC1 will play back high-quality Blu-ray Disc videos in HD resolution including 1080p and DVD video images, as well as two-channel and multichannel music from CDs, DVD-Audio and SACD discs.

"Multichannel signals will be output over the player’s dual HDMI outputs, as well as over 7.1-channel audio jacks. In addition, the player offers the option of outputting SACD signals natively in DSD format over a new proprietary Denon Link 4 HDMI connection for decoding by a compatible Denon pre-amp or receiver. Alternatively, the multichannel signals can be transcoded to PCM with full bass management over HDMI, as Sony’s PlayStation3 unit does now.

The fourth edition of the Denon Link HDMI connection adds a new “Denon Flow Control” feature, which takes over the master clock and jitter control in Denon’s current flagship pre-amp and upcoming Denon A/V receivers.

Jeff Talmadge, Denon’s product development and systems integration director, told the trade consumer publication TWICE that the Flow Control function in the Denon Link system will enable digital signals from optical discs to be transmitted “virtually jitter-free” and will support “the world's first fully-balanced two-channel transmission for analog signals.”

Denon is positioning the component as the third piece in its flagship home-entertainment system that also includes the AVP-A1HDCI A/V preamplifier and the POA-A1HDCI 10-channel power amplifier. The latter two began shipping last February. All can be connected and interoperated via the aforementioned Denon Link 4 HDMI transmission technology.

The Denon Link 4 system will be backward compatible with earlier Denon Link components, but will be limited to the capabilities of those earlier models, the company said. Denon Link 4 is based on the HDMI-CEC standard and should also be compatible with most other HDMI-CEC enabled devices.

Denon said it plans to announce a firmware update for the AVP-A1HDCI and AVR-5308CI models to support the Denon Link 4 system shortly.

The DVD-A1UCDI will also be Denon’s first “BD-Live ready” player, meaning that it will have the full Blu-ray Profile 2.0 feature specifications following a firmware update. Denon said it plans to make that update available over an Ethernet connection shortly after the player hits the market.

The player will have 1GB of built-in memory to support the BD-Live functionality with no additional memory required; however, it will also include a built-in SD card slot for any additional memory that may be desired and to play digital music and photo files.

For internal video processing, the DVD-A1UDCI includes Silicon Optix’s 10-bit Realta HQV chipset with up-conversion and IP scaling via HDMI to 1080p. In addition, Denon’s Pixel Image Correction (DPIC), which is an original Denon video-enhancement technology for correcting high-definition images, uses 10-bit processing to further improve detection and precision in the curvature correction of images, the company said.

Denon said this will enable detection and processing of the image at the pixel level in the vertical, horizontal and diagonal direction, and is applied to standard images from DVD as well as HD images from Blu-ray discs.

In addition, the player is equipped with a 14-bit Analog Devices digital-to-analog video converter.

In developing the player, Denon said it has also re-engineered its original Advanced S.V.H. mechanism that will support, among other things, advanced networking functionality. Denon said the scheduled BD-Live firmware update will also offer “a host of unprecedented 21st century networking facilities.”

For audio, the DVD-A1UDCI includes Advanced AL32 processing that will allow digital upsampling of 16-bit and 24-bit signals to 32 bits. The player offers full onboard HD Audio decoding from the DDSC-HD circuitry, and will allow for bit stream bypass to HDMI for Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD High Resolution Audio, and DTS-HD Master Audio digital transmission to the AVR/AVP for decoding.

The player uses a solid direct mechanical ground construction to "virtually eliminate vibration," the company said. The unit’s structure was designed with a low center of gravity for maximum vibration resistance and quiet operation.

The cabinet is composed of a heavy-duty, dual-layer, steel top cover; clamper cover; zinc die-cast mechanism case; newly developed floating dampers; and a thin aluminum die-cast tray.

The power transformer is placed near the ground and immediately above the insulators to allow direct release to the ground and thoroughly prevent the propagation of unwanted vibration or noise.

The 7.1-channel analog output contacts are made of gold-plated brass. The onboard Ethernet port allows for Internet connectivity, for firmware updates, BD Live interactivity and IP control.

The dual HDMI outputs are fully assignable to allow sending separate audio and video streams to two separate systems or running a program’s HDMI audio signal to a processor while the video is sent to a projector.

As with all Denon CI products, third-party control systems can be managed via the RS-232C port.

The HDMI 1.3a connection will also support Deep Color signal sources.

Denon said it will make the DVD-A1UDCI available to authorized Denon CI dealers along with the matching flag-ship pre-amp and 10-channel amp.

Denon said that while music labels in recent years have stepped back somewhat in supporting the DVD-Audio and SACD formats with new releases, “there are still a few labels out there supporting SACD.”

Joe Stinziano, Denon sales and marketing senior VP, said the company hopes that as users become aware of the additional benefits of multichannel sound from the advanced codecs offered in the Blu-ray Disc format, they will begin to seek out the multichannel music discs that are still available.

In addition, a lot of the target customers for the player are expected to already have DVD-Audio and SACD music libraries and will use the new player to update and consolidate older DVD-Audio and SACD equipment with a unit offering Blu-ray compatibility."

With a little dust. Admittedly not the most attractive picture. Flashes tend to show what life conceals. The DVD-A1UCDI ($3800) plays Blu-ray, SACD, DVD, and CD, among other things. But wait, there's more.

This is the disc drive of Denon's universal player. It is entirely a Denon creation, not sourced from another company. So now you get more of an idea of what your $3800 pays for. But wait, there's still more.

This is the whole player dissected, with all its parts laid out -- the disc drive, the power supply, the DACs, everything. Awesome.

Don't really see how you can make an apples to apples comparison between units with a $3300 price difference, and there is already a thread in the HT forum for the Denon.

How about starting a new thread next time instead of filling up an unrelated one with a ton of unrelated photos? :T

I have been waiting a long time for a player like this Oppo. I really hope DVD audio is included. I don't care the format is dead. I still have a few disc's I like to play. I also really want 1 player instead of 2 or 3.
Anyone get any new words yet?
