    Rebuys on HD-DVDs?

I was thinking about this the other day, and hear me out before you think I'm crazy.

Ok so I have about 25 HD-DVDs, 30 Blu-rays, and 100+ SD-DVDs. I have a Toshiba XA2 & Panny BD30 to play them. Now at first I thought, there's no way in hell I'd rebuy all my HD-DVDs as blu-rays. BUT upon actually looking at them, it looks like it might actually work.

    *=combo disc, ~=have on SDDVD.

    300*
    Aeon Flux
    American Gangster*
    Apollo 13~
    Batman Begins~
    Bourne Identity~
    Bourne Supremecy~
    Bourne Ultimatum*
    Charlie & Choc Factory
    The Departed*
    DVE*
    Firewall*
    Full Metal Jacket~
    Heroes Season 1
    Hulk
    King Kong
    Last Samurai~
    Matrix~
    Matrix Reloaded~
    Matrix Revolutions~
    Oceans 13*
    Planet Earth
    Top Gun
    Transformers

Now out of all of those, here's the list of ones I'd actually want on Blu-ray (* = not available on blu-ray yet):

    300
    Apollo 13*
    Batman Begins
    Bourne Identity*
    Bourne Supremecy*
    Bourne Ultimatum*
    Full Metal Jacket
    Last Samurai
    Transformers (soon obviously)

so dropping those that are available in cart at amazon = $103. Assume $25 for the other four and you get ~$200 total. Now the list of movies I lose completely is:

    Aeon Flux
    Charlie & Choc Factory
    Heroes Season 1
    Hulk
    King Kong
    Planet Earth
    Top Gun

All of these were free, and except Planet Earth & King Kong, not worth it in HD IMHO (Though I haven't even watched Heroes yet).

So anyhow the conclusion/moral of the story/etc is, is it worth $200 to completely remove a piece of equipment out of your setup? Free up an HDMI port? Not saying I'm going to do it but after looking over it, it doesn't seem to be quite as obvious of a choice... what do you guys think? What are your situations? I know some of yall have 100+ HDDVDs, obviously that would get way too expensive but my guess is a lot of those with HDDVDs are closer to me in terms of quantity.

Hero's is a must own for me. My wife and I started watching it on a monday, and ended up with a marathon weekend to finish it, it was so addictive.

I will ONLY replace an HD DVD with a Blu-ray IF the HD DVD gets damaged/lost. Otherwise, the only scenario I can foresee calling for replacements is if BOTH my HD DVD players die. As I've never had a disc player (CD/DVD/DVD-A/SACD/HD DVD/PC drives, save a very cheap portable DVD player for the car) "die" (and I've had CD players since 1985--all of which remain functional today), I'm not worried. I do have 110 or so titles in HD DVD, so the expense, especially as about 60% of them were bought for 8$ or less (along with 5 freebies), would be prohibitive, but even if I had only a third as many, I'd still not replace them.

Now, there is another scenario that might apply, but I suspect it will be very limited. If a BD edition of something I have on HD DVD has something significantly better to offer (and lossless audio is not sufficient), I might get one. It would have to be something like the LOTR EE vs theatrical "upgrade" of something I have on HD DVD. Given the titles I have, it would be an unlikely scenario, but I cannot rule it out entirely.

Definitely a good discussion topic. I'm not going to re-buy any of my HD-DVD's until my player dies.

Chuck, let me know if you want to sell any of your HD-DVD's for cheap. Could help you defray the cost of re-buying them on BD.

Yeah if I do sell them I'll definitely post up here. Not sure yet though, I'm actually interested to see how much I could get for my XA2... I noticed they skyrocketed in price after toshiba nixed HDDVD... which is pretty weird.

Chuck, it's my understanding that the XA2 is one of the best upconverting players out there for standard dvd, so I'm sure there is a market for it, but I have no idea what it would be worth.

If I owned the XA2 I wouldn't sell it as I have well over 1000 standard dvds and would use the XA2 until it died, which would probably be after I kicked the bucket ...

I agree. I thought about replacing my HDDVDs, but I have about 50 movies (surprised me!) and I don't see myself re-buying them all.

I came across my first BD rebuy consideration last week. I almost bought Batman Returns. My HDDVD player is down at the moment, pending a new proc' and I wanted to watch it before going to see DK.

I ended up not watching it.

I wish reviewers would give comparisons to HDDVDs also. Some movies I'd consider rebuying if the audio was better (such as DTSMA 7.1 over 5.1 DD+).

Yeah that is still the plan I'm going with (using the XA2 for SDDVDs) and it does upconvert very well. It's just annoyingly slow to boot. My main reason in asking is I'd seen some pretty inflated prices. If I could sell it for $400-500 I think it'd be worth selling. If not I'd just keep it.

The Bourne Identity - a review

I thought "The Bourne Identity" was okay, not as good as I'd hoped, but not horrible, just didn't have enough bite to it. Matt Damon is okay as Jason Bourne. I found Franka Potente endearing in her role. Bourne is definitely a badass, even if it's just reflex kicking in when he needs the moves....

                    Hey there,

I just set up my new HT system, and was dying to watch King Kong on DVD... the new Peter Jackson one, obviously.

I was sorely disappointed. Is it my system, or does the movie just not have nicely mixed sound?

For example, the T-Rex battle on the...
