Lord of the rings DVD info

    Two 'LOTR' DVDs planned
    By JAM! Movies
Peter Jackson's "Lord Of The Rings: Fellowship Of The Ring" will be released on DVD in two separate editions.

The film, which has already raked in $710 million in worldwide grosses, will first arrive on DVD in August. Entertainment Weekly reports that the initial version will be a straightforward release of the film's theatrical cut.

In the fall, fans can expect a multi-disc director's cut, with an extra half-hour of footage, including some Hobbit songs, background on Viggo Mortensen's Aragorn character, and an extended gift-giving scene involving Cate Blanchett's Elf Queen character, the report said.

It's worth noting that the release of the deluxe edition is likely timed to capitalize on the planned November opening of the second film in the trilogy, "The Two Towers." The campaign to hype that project officially begins on March 29, when theatrical showings of "Fellowship" will begin featuring a three-and-a-half minute trailer for "The Two Towers."

Entertainment Weekly reports that "Towers" will boast about 600 effects shots, 80 more than "Fellowship."

Gollum, the original keeper of the titular ring, who was glimpsed only briefly in "Fellowship," will be a major player in "Towers," travelling with Frodo (Elijah Wood) and Sam (Sean Astin) to Mount Doom, EW reports. Actor Andy Serkis acted the role in a lycra jumpsuit, which provided data for computer animation teams who later filled in Gollum on screen.

Shelob, the giant spider that battles Frodo at the climax of author J.R.R. Tolkien's novel "The Two Towers," has been shifted to the third film in the series, "The Return Of The King." The reason? There wasn't enough for Frodo and Sam to do in the third film, EW says.

The report also reveals that John Rhys-Davies, who portrays the Dwarf Gimli, will provide the voice of the talking tree Treebeard, which will be a computer-generated character. Brad Dourif will portray Grima Wormtongue, the report said.

The report added that the pivotal battle of Helm's Deep will be shaped from up to 20 hours of footage shot by Jackson. Sound effects for that sequence were recently recorded by Jackson at a New Zealand cricket match, EW reports

This is the DVD announcement of the year! Thanks for those details.

Will the multi-disc "director's cut" have both the theatrical release version and the extended version (via seamless branching or two separate programs) or just the extended version? Either way, it is good for them to let us know in advance that two DVD releases are planned rather than "surprising" us with the news of the second one after we've already purchased the first one.

At any rate, one or the other of these editions will be on my DVD shopping list later in the year!

I seem to recall reading that the 'extended' version will have both cuts of the movie.

        latest news...4 discs 8O

The forthcoming DVD release of "The Lord Of The Rings: Fellowship Of The Ring" will be available in two expansive packages: a double-disc set and a monster four-disc package.

The DVD news website thedigitalbits.com reports that the two-disc set, in stores Aug. 6, will contain one disc with the full theatrical version of the film and a second disc with two hours of bonus content.

The second disc will include a 10-minute preview of the film's forthcoming sequel, "The Two Towers," a "Welcome To Middle Earth" special, the Fox TV special "The Quest For The Ring," the Sci-Fi Channel special "A Passage To Middle Earth, 15 featurettes prepared for the film's official website, theatrical trailers, TV spots, and Enya's music video for the Oscar-nominated song "May It Be."

The disc will also include a preview of the forthcoming "The Two Towers" video game, DVD-Rom content, and a preview of the four-disc package.

The Digital Bits also reported that Nov. 12 has been set for the extended edition of the film. The four discs will be housed in a box made to look like a leather-bound hardcover book.

The first two discs will contain the film, with director Peter Jackson's extended cut of the film, with 30 minutes of new scenes. New special effects and music are being created to fill out the additional scenes.

The second two discs will contain six hours of behind-the-scenes material, much of that material still in production. The site said Jackson will provide a narration track, and there will be artwork and photo galleries.

Among the new scenes to be included in the film:

Bilbo works on his memoirs and provides more Hobbit history.

Scenes introducing Samwise Gamgee, as a gardener.

Hobbits singing at the Green Dragon Inn.

The departure of the Elves for Bree.

Aragorn watching over the sleeping Hobbits, singing a ballad.

Aragorn at his mother's grave, and the revelation that he was raised by Elves.

Two more scenes depicting the departure from Rivendale.

An additional scene in the mines of Moria, with information about the fate of the Dwarves.

Galadriel's bestowing of gifts on the Fellowship.

Additional battle footage, which could raise the film's rating to an R.

The four disc set will also be available in a gift package, with a National Geographic special on the film, game cards, and a pair of bookends created by artists who designed the film

I have also read that the theatrical cut will NOT be included in the 4 disc extended cut.

It's great that the extended cut will focus a little more on Aragorn. Thematically, I like his character, but I also like Viggo Mortensen as an actor.

I'm still a little surprised that the whole Tom Bombadil segment was ignored. Admittedly, it doesn't fit in the flow of the movie, but it's a substantial segment of the first book that was simply "erased".

                Hmm...I've never read the books.

I really wanted to LOVE this film, but I came away with a gentle fondness for it instead.

For me, pacing is something that a great film gets right, and I didn't think the pacing was right in this film. Perhaps it was the source material,...
