How can a thread close a moderator?

And, btw, I think the moderator forgot to close the thread! :B

Are you sure about that? I've been able to close a thread from "At the Movies" and moved it to "DVD Director"

Hmm, maybe I should keep quite about the power I have. MWHAHHAHAHAHAH!

The rule is, you have to be moderator OF a specific section dudes. So before you "Strike", at least know the rules, haha.

Since Andrew is a mod in here, he could close this I think.

Well, if you ask me, this thread isn't closed- it appears to be quite open for business.

What kind of business, I don't know. Maybe just monkey business.

Is this thread ACTing up again?

You now, I realized that I've never really stepped up to the plate in my moderating duties, since I have no idea how to close a thread. But that's one of the nice things about the relatively low profile HTGUIDE has- we don't get the loonies and maroons who have nothing better to do with their time than to see if they can annoy or povoke someone.

Now if we can just figure out how to grow things while maintaining that nice "village" atmosphere....

OT, I had what I hope is a neat idea for DIY speaker stands- gotta order a tool in order to build them, but expect something in a week or so. It's being prompted by the fact that the M-8's sound better the higher you get them off the floor (less early reflections and comb filtering, I suspect).

Jon, we could use a membership blitz. Maybe if Thomas let us give away his whispers, that could generate some membership, lol.

Actually, check the directory and click the registered column. You will see that we have actually increased our growth rate, albeit, not astronomically. 15 new members this month. More than that for Jan and Feb. So, may be looking at 75 new members for the Qrter, or more. That's not "bad" growth. The real key is to get these new guys posting. A large percentage of people like to read more than post. Well, that's a catch 22, cause if everyone thinks that way, there's very little to read. That's why I always like to encourage participation by all! Even if you have little to say.

That would be like asking me to part with my first(and ony) born child Elaine. (No chance!) Those are his "babies".

Even if we are in discussions for how to upgrade them.

We figure since Jeff Duddleston came up with this new duded up version of the whispers, called the Helix, using DSP and all kinds of signal degrading poop to doll up the sound , we'd have to show him how it's really done by audiophoolia. We're just in an arguement now about whether to use M6a HiVi drivers or SEAS Excel 7" drivers. (I'm actually in favor of the Excels, but then it's not my money! )

The new Helix's were shown at the CES, but aren't for sale yet; the quote price is $38K. I think that gives us some room for a few upgrades, huh? Could throw in an Ayre amp or two or four as well....

Lex, I've still got a pot full of Aragon amps; they're well built, they kick butt in the bottom end (uh, am I allowed to say that?), and we bought a lot of them fairly cheap.

                                                    Can you spell "Mod Squad"?

I've been playing around with NLFB designs a few years, and Charlie Hansen's company Ayre has been producing them since the mid nineties.

I have what I think is one of the better conventional feedback designs around; (modesty is another one of my many virtues ), (it was designed on spec for a pro company doing custom amps for studio's; it won a shoot out against Electrocompaniet Nemo monoblocks and various Crown amps, too). But I'm coming around to the same way of thinking as Chas, re loop feedback. I've even taken one of my own "conventional" circuits and listened to it with different levels of loop gain, by just changing the local collector loading. Can't tell you why, (yet) but the lower the loop gain (less feedback) the better it sounds.

Go listen to an Ayre, Theta, or BAT design sometime. Preferably on a speaker that uses pistonic operation exclusively for the drivers. You'll wind up recalibrating your expectations if you do.

                                                    I double dare you, Lex!

As for the Aragons, as soon as I get through twiddling with the M8 project, testing some Vifa XT-25's for a friend, and getting the dipoles I'm working on up and running(oh, guess I didn't mention those, did I? - think dual SHIVA 12's, dual HiVi M8a midwoofers, Accuton C44 midrange, and Audax DTIO1 titanium tweeter), I'll go back to working on the new front end.

ThomasW has been building a pair of M8's with a friend in Denver, and a smaller sealed set with half the enclosure volume for himself (computer room, different crossover); they're the "beta" site; so far I'm hearing fairly positive noises coming from him and Pete. So we may be ready to wrap these soon.

The Aragon's do use the same bipolar output transistor type as Chas and I have been using, (though I doubt they match them), and I've been working on a new design to retrofit to our Aragon chasis. I got an old Quatre Gain Cell amp (DG250) to build a test mule in- I used to sell those in the mid seventies, and they were claiming no conventional feedback then. I'm still testing some different front end transistors, and also working on a fully balanced differential version for my Palladiums. This isn't the same circuit overall as the Ayre; Ayre's is a complementary balanced JFET input, (looks like a differential pair, but there's no feedback connection, only positive and negative inputs), with complementary current mirrors instead of folded cascodes like most of their older designs. The design I'm working on uses a cross coupled differential front end with differential pair monolithic JFETs and matched bipolar differential pairs, with a buffered complementary voltage amplifer stage. Output stage is pretty similar to Ayre's (since we discussed the concepts during development of the V5 and V6), based on an RF technique to achieve stabilization with capacitive loads, while using no output inductors. That's something I first used on the big MOSFET monoblocks I designed for the small pro company (under NDA- don't ask, don't tell).

I'm jazzed; I just wish I didn't have to put up with this day job. Well, something's gotta pay the bills, right?

Man, you lost me at "Mod Squad". lol.

Go listen to an Ayre, Theta, or BAT design sometime. Preferably on a speaker that uses pistonic operation exclusively for the drivers. You'll wind up recalibrating your expectations if you do.

                                                      I double dare you, Lex!
I am not sure I can afford to have my RPTV recalibrated, let alone my expectations on the audio side, lol.

Clive, relax man, my 2 channel system resides in the floor in front of my RPTV. That's where my HPA-2 sits now.

Of course, I do have a rather specific amp requirement. My HPA-2 accepts RCA and XLR inputs at the same time, with a switch to go back and forth between them. Not many amps likely offer this feature.
