New Sony Progressive player, have your cake and eat it too?

Let me get to the point. Sony is now introducing their first progressive player and in addition, it will support SACD all for $1500. http://www.sel.sony.com/SEL/corpcomm...sumer/626.html

Now I know there are other progressive players out there, but when ThomasW mentioned that he really liked his SACD player, and it was on sale for $1700 or so, I was thinking, if I waited for this, I can get a progressive dvd player with my SACD player.

Well really I can't afford either, but it's nice to think about these things.

I don't like it, I LOVE the 777ES SACD player.

The new DVD player is supposed to utilize some of the technology from the first generation SACD players.

Iv'e been pleased with my S7000 DVD player, the lack of DTS isn't a significant issue for me.

But I may wait for the following generation DVD machine, because it should have multichannel SACD playback, along with DVD-A, and all the rest of the bells and whistles. So a truly universal machine

If this player is anything like those 7000s (truly built like tanks, with razor sharp picture)... they will be in high demand. Should give the upcoming SD-9200 a run for its money.

A good question might be: Does it have selectable refresh rates?

            Thomas,

I haven't looked and was wondering if you could tell me what kind of software is availble for the SACD and what is the average price per disk? Also, do you have a separate 2-channel system with analog preamp or do you run through your HT pre/pro?

Another good question might be what happened to the post I put here last night, lol. :? Really, I posted a rather long post here and today it's gone.

                Hi Phil,

Presently there are 60 or so SACD's available. If a person is into classic jazz or classical, these areas have the most options.

Disc cost varies from $22-30/disc depending on whether the discs are SACD only=lower price, or dual layer, CD & SACD playable=higher price.

The big plus for me is that the SACD player makes "regular" CD's sound much better too.

My system is setup as follows. "Pure audio" sources ie CD. SACD, tape, tuner, etc, are run into a Marchand PR41 Passive pre-amp. All sources associated with video, feed a Sony TA-E9000ES. The output from both "pre-amps" goes to a manual DIY switch(silver contacts, no common grounds, etc.). The output of this switch feeds the first of the two active XO's. The equipment chain after this switch is the same for audio or HT.

The primary reason for this setup is that regardless of cost, I've never heard a pro/pro that is "transparent" like the Marchand PR41. I'm not as critical of video source material as I am of pure audio sources. So this setup allows me the best of both worlds.

Here are some SACD sources, the first has the best pricing. DMP and AudioQuest also have discs I don't have their URLs'

I see Sony finally got rid of their fold down door. The picture looks like the drawer is very, very thin.
I'll be interested in listening to this unit for sure.

                      Lex,

                      Thomas,
With regard to transparent pre-pros. I felt the same way you do until I got my Bryston SP-1. Give one a listen sometime in bypass and see what you think.

                          Thomas, very nice setup chain!

that's a good idea for me too.
how much is that passive Marchand?

can you put a link to the specifications?

                          thanks
