This is Post 2000 for Lex! Wah!

Ok, I had to make a celebration out of this, since this is post 2K for me. Where is Andrew anyway? :W

Today, if you haven't visited TTP or Audio Hideout, I added a 6th and 7th Sonus faber speaker to my collection, only this time the Concertino. Please see Audio Hideout for the story if your interested.
    Here's the pics:

Very nice Lex! How are you using them?

BTW, are those customized speaker stands? Very nice.

Sili, thanks, using them as mains right now. Just for a trial to see what they are capable of. Torn between two master plans for them.

                  1. Pull the Kappa rears with the 10" woofs and move them to the warehouse, move the Concertos to the rear, and let the Tinos do side duty. Or vice versa. But irregardless, the Kapps likely will not be sold. They will be retained for my Audio video museum someday, lol. Seriously, they are so good, I hate to loose them, simply to good to dump imo.

                  2. Or just dispensing with that plan, and use the Tinos or Concertos in the bedroom, and using the other pair as sides, keeping the same rears.

Of course, I simply must try the totally Sonus faber 7 channel setup. That's a given. I have to see just how good it can sound. I suppose the gain in cohesiveness will be more advantagous than the 10" woofs in the rears.

As for the stands, yes, those are iso"bar"ic speaker platforms. Very pricey and available at Target. lol. Actually, the ones with black bases make good inexpensive speaker stands, I have used them as side stands and they disappear into the room really. The white, no it doesn't disappear to well.

Thanks Bob. I do love these things. The 4 similar speakers at the back look great too some 5 feet apart. Just tried that tonight. Moved the Concertinos to the rear, simply placed on the stools in front of my tower rears. lol. I need to get over there and enjoy it some more before I say much on it.

Nothing like a nice addition to the family.

Also, I added a Sony STD-DA555ES for my bedroom system. The guy I bought it from wasn't into HT, he aquired the unit with his Diner's Club points. All this to say $400 out-the-door. Real nice!!

                                  Doug,

Should we just call you Mr. SF for short? I know a lot of us tend to wind up being loyal to a few brands, sometimes not intentionally, but just because the stuff seems to "fit". You've taken that to a higher level, certainly with speakers. Maybe we should do a thread on that someday- what component type do we each tend to buy only one brand, because of perception or how it meets our needs?

Other than a couple of Denon CD players in the late 80's, I've been in a real Sony rut for source gear.

For a while I wouldn't buy any video stuff except Toshiba, but lately it's kind of flip flopped to Sony. My daughter loved inheriting the Toshiba gear, though.

Amps though, have been all over the place- home built, Denon monoblocks, Sony power amps, and Aragon.

Haven't bought a commerical speaker since the pair of Maggies I owned in the mid 70's.

What about you guys? Major league brand loyalty, or every purchase evaluated in a wide field of competitors?

                                  -Jon

                                    Thanks Trev! lol.

Jon, actually it would be Mr. Sf. The f is never capitalized in Sonus faber. Why? I haven't the faintest! lol. Yes, I did find a brand that I am proud to call mine. I am sure there are others out there that "could have been". Like Aerial, always a fascination with their line. Unfortunately, the 7500 entry price tage for the 10T was to much to handle. I moved into Sf gradually. First buying the center, and then stepping into the GPs. Next a pair of Concertos used with Lovan Ballet II stands. Now the concertinos. So, moving into high end speakers in phases worked well for me.

Plus no local dealer for Aerial as with Sf. Nothing quite like auditioning locally and having warranty service locally. The workmanship on the Sonus faber line, is the quality that I strive to achieve in the cables I build. Built one at a time, by hand, with attention to detail-

I think a lot of us tend to upgrade our mains then the remaining rears and centre all follow in line. When looking for a pre amp there wasn't many that fit what I wanted and after swapping out nearly half a dozen the denon seemed to give me the sound I wanted... Things just sort of fell into place. I wouldn't say I'm a Denon fan though just more that some of the alternatives didn't meet the grade at the time I was looking. Interestingly though I really wanted to like the Rotel pre amp I tried...I've always liked Rotel and even though it fell flat on its face I'm still fond of Rotel gear...

Lex as an enthusiast it seems logical to have all the same speakers in your system. Your system must sound very sweet, congratulations.

No doubt, those are some cute little speakers...but how do you get big sound out of something so small? (just kidding)

Lexman now that you have some time with all the SF speakers how is the timber match with the different lines. Do the Concertinos match to the Concertos? I am assuming that you have the four Concert… working the back and sides. Do they all use the same tweeter?

You mentioned that the new speakers from SF are brighter. Do you know if they are using new drivers or is it a new speaker configuration?

                                                Thanks

Mark, the timbre match is exact between the Concertos and Tinos, IMO. The Tweeters are identical I believe. Yes, the 4 "bookshelf" concert series speakers are side and rear. GPs up front. It's really quite nice what it did for my soundstage. I have to admit, the gains in timbre match far exceed the need for low end bass in the rear. I think the Tinos will be staying in the main theater. :B

As for the new models, they are using different tweeters for sure. They are also using new mid drivers in the GPs. Of course, the GPs of the concert series did not have a low end woof. (not 3 -way), consequently a change here likely makes sense because the mid to low driver of the 2-way design obviously must cover more range than it's 3-way counterpart-
