Instead of renting a digital cable box from the cable company, you rent a card which you insert into the slot on your cable-card enabled TV, Tivo, whatever, and it enables the device to receive the digital channels that you are subscribed to. It's similar to the smart cards used in satellite boxes.Comment

Exactly what Kevin said. It basically is only needed for digital cable or pay channels. It's more or less just responsible for authentication.
This thing has 2 slots so you can either have 1 multi-lane card, or 2 single lane cards, as it can record off a maximum of 2 tuners at the same time.
I really can't wait for it to come out! I've been wanting pretty much this exact thing for some time now.
Oh, and some cable companies, like Comcast will actually provide the cable cards to customers for free.Comment
