    When do I need HDMI?

In what circumstances is DVI not sufficient?

Go ahead! Roll out the HT 101 tutorial for me. :W

I believe DVI only carries the picture but HDMI carries both picture and sound. I think that is the only difference - no difference in picture quality.

I would believe HDMI is just a 'future' standard...therefore replacing DVI.

As more and more tv's come out...you will see less and less DVI.

As far as being insufficient...if i'm not mistaken...digital qaulity is digital quality. There is not an inherent difference between signal quality of the two designs.

Actually HDMI is better for longer runs.

Also the conversion process has some issues. For instance a dvd playe with hdmi trying to convert to DVI on your display could have some issues displaying blacker than black.

Also HDMI has different versions with a future version being able to deliver SACD over it. It is not allowed just yet.

Does the same hold true when converting DVI (HDTV signal) into HDMI (MONITOR INPUT)?

              Junior,
Could you specify what you mean by "same hold true"?

                Sorry, should have quoted it...

I just wanted to confirm the reverse 'direction' is true to what you had said.

Yes as far as I can tell. You'd rather keep the signal as unconverted as much as possible.

HDMI exsists because the media content providers want a secure enctryption capable delivery system with a "special" connection.

HDMI really provides few advantages to consumers, it is here for other reasons.
