My hat's off to JimmyP58 and NextLevel

Just wanted to say that if you're looking to buy some gear, consider our jimmyp58's company NextLevel. I just made a purchase with him, the price was right, and he was pleasant to work with and took care of my requests and other details from start to finish. Now my system's achieved the "Next Level".

    Thanks, Jim.

I was never unhappy with my system, but when I started the hobby years ago, I always had a preconceived idea of where I'd like to be with my sound. Now I'm genuinely enthralled. I hate to sound cliched, but I've achieved the Next Level. Thanks again, Jim.

jimmyp58. I was hoping you could shed some light on a comparison between Bryston and Earthquake as you are using both at the moment.
I am currently using an Earthquake Cinenova 3 for my front 3 channels (B&W 803D's and an HTM3S). I am very happy with the sound but you know how the upgrade bug can bite. Thanks for your help.

                              springer:

Well, they actually fair quite equally actually. I'd say the Bryston still is better but once upon a time ago, I did a somewhat 'blind' test (had a friend help me) and there were moments I couldn't discern between the Bryston 4B SST I had at the time and the CineNova Grande 5. They were that close. I did the test for 2-channel only. I had some Def Tech speakers at the time too and being bipolar in nature, it probably added to the difficulty in discerning whether the Earthquake was better than the Bryston (or visa versa). It would be interesting, now, if I did it with speakers that I have as they are solely front firing and much more atune to fine nuances (VMPS).

I did notice that in segments (I have an ear for fine detail being a musician) and it this regards, the Bryston outdid the Earthquake, even with the Def Techs. Cymbal sticking/brushing was more life-like and natural with the Bryston than the Earthquake.

I would guesstimate that with my VMPS speakers, if I redid the test I'd give the nod to the Bryston but that Earthquake amp is a killer in it's own right (and an awesome value too).

Thanks, Pat and Azeke! Hey, BrystonWill has a nice ring to it.

To further what Jim mentioned and add my own thoughts, the treble extension from the Bryston is sweet. It's known that the B&W Nautilus tweeters can get a little forward, but I think the Bryston calmed them down. One of the first things I caught from the Bryston was cymbal tapping was really clear even when a lot of other things were going on. Actually, everything remains clear during complex passages. The big keys to the Bryston are power, which seems to be never-ending, and clarity. Powerful and clear bass and midrange, and clear, unmuffled highs. One concert DVD I listened to so far on the new amp is New Order 511. It is a very cracking recording, and I cranked it up to my reference level with the DTS track. It was simply LOUD (true outdoor concert-like level), but what impressed the heck out of me was the clarity of the whole thing, which never unwavered. Even after that brutal workout, the amp was just lukewarm to the touch. 8O

On the whole, everything sounds weightier and bigger, for lack of better terminology. Just to make sure I wasn't fooling myself and that the Bryston output wasn't in reality higher at my usual favorite CD-listening volume, I took out my SPL meter and re-measured the front L and R pink noise levels. They were exactly the same as before. Sure, 300 watts going into a 150-watt-rated speaker is overkill perhaps, but B&Ws are known to be power-greedy and the Bryston has assumed command and is making them sing like never before.

I haven't even watched a movie on it yet!

I didn't mention that it's dead silent at idle. Putting my ear against the woofer won't tell me whether it's on or off. Only a bit of tweeter hiss gives it away.

jimmyp58 and will1066 thanks for thee feedback on the Bryston. I am still extremely happy with my Earthquake 3 and with your musicians ears having a hard time telling them apart I know I couldn't. So until I have an EXTRA $4000 laying around I think I will stay with the Earthquake. But when I do I will buy from you.

I ama able to obtain a pair for taylo ref for a good price and this would allow me to have cash left over to upgrade my amp.
