    Shocking Revelation...

    Hi

Let me tell you a story…

In commenting on THIS thread I formed the view that on of our members had “wooferitis” a rather specialised form of upgraditis. This member (Bladerunner) was encouraging his brother to get a second SVS PB4+ for a medium sized HT room (one of these SVS babies is good for 126 dB of clean bass).

Then I thought harder. Remembered by layman’s phycology. Wasn’t there something called Munchausen syndrome by proxy (a dreadful thing as those with brave hearts will see HERE– maybe we were talking about something simular here… "Wooferitus by Proxy".

    Excited, I researched further… 8O

Like all good amature scientists I sought a more general case of my theory. Of course there could be “Upgraditus by Proxy”. Checking it out clearly Bladerunner had it – wanting his brother to but JMLabs Utopias etc…

Looking at some more posts it hit me… There was case after case. HT Guide member after member… So many of us had Upgraditis often combined with Upgraditus by Proxy… Indeed we use this forum to foster our needs…

Horrified – I realised the need for a stiff drink…

And then – well then I’m off to read some home theatre mags…

    Geoff,

After many years of extensive, expensive therapy with many of the best trained minds in Houston, I've reached the point in my life where I can now freely upgrade on my own, standing on my own two feet, without the need for upgrade by proxy. I am a man of the new century, proud of his manlyness, secure in his ability to upgrade without guilt, without. . . .

Aw hell, who am I kidding, where's that new Stereophile? : :B

        It's worse than I thought....

        David,

You are so right... This appears to have a long sad history... For example I just remembered THIS Club Rotel thread full of heart-rending confessions of people caught up with this dreadful problem.

        I must stop...

        I will stop...

Just as soon as I have upgraded:
        • My speakers - I need new B&Ws to sing sweet music to me...
        • My Surround amps - to drive that B&W HTM1 Centre in the way it neeeeeeds.
        • My DVD Player - I need a new Universal one (the Deon 3910 or perhaps the Marantz...)
        • My rack...
        • And a new HT processor (or should I just install upgraded components in the one I have.. seeing as I have already bought them )

Oh - and I need to install my new 9 silver analogue cables from Lex when they come

        And my new Power Cables...

        And then... And then....

        I will stop...

And just spend my time listening and watching...

Oh – and surfing and posting in the forums - just in case something new comes up that I HAVE to have …

See then I will be cured….

Hmmm... I've got a combonation of "downgraditus" and "upgraditus".

              Let's see... I've went from:

Snell B-Minors with Snell surrounds to PSB Image speakers. (downgraditus)

Lexicon pre/pro to Sony pre/pro (downgraditus)... but I did get a touch of upgraditus and went back up to Rotel pre/pro but now I've got downgraditus again and am going from Rotel to a Denon receiver for a pre/pro (where's my mind).

Funny thing is that my sound quality has remained fairly stable through all this (so far... haven't got the Denon receiver in just yet). My ears are suffering from the inabiltiy to be critical.

My eyes are still pretty good though with glasses and I have suffered some of the upgraditus with the HT room video in a nicer DVD player (Toshiba to Denon 2900) and a PJ (2HD).

ok ok so I have this afflicition (Sometimes I wake up in the morning and I'm covered in strange spots, I miss huge chunks of time and recently learned I was being watched by 'men in white coats'. This troubles me because I always thought abductees were visited by Men In Black 8O). Come to think of it I noticed a black van in my street with the words 'SVS Testing Unit' stencilled down it's side. hmmm.

So yeah - "My name is BladeRnR and I have a problem" - clap clap clap clap.

No I just like ribbing Sithlord about his system but a second B4+ in a much larger room would be viable (Now I only said viable not mandatory but this could very easily change - my self justification circuit is world class let me tell you). Well Geoff has me sussed and I cannot hide it anymore - I'm one of the 'more is better' crowd in the Bass department! Funny story (recently):

We play our HT at very reasonable hours but one night Sithlord got home late with a new disk and cranked it up at about 23:00. Now our room is so far from sound-proofed it's not funny. Our neighbour (God bless her) pulled me aside and started complaining that we kept her up 'that night' and that the ornaments in her room were dancing across her shelves. It took all my self-control to not burst out laughing but as any good neighbour I apologised profusely and assured her it 'would never happen again'. When I related the story to Sithlord he just punched the air and said 'Yes' - 'Dancing ornaments across the shelf'

Nice thread Geoff. I'm a very bad influence on Sithlord as he'll readily agree

Amps to create "revelation" on 802D / 800D

                  Geoff and others,

Can we come up with 5 to 10 amps that would drive 802D and 800D's to that "revelation". Where we can open them up at a high volume and no fatigue; and at low listening levels very detailed and good bass.

I have some interest in WaveGuide controlled dispersion for DIY so I did some searching for waveguide sounds at the CES and I found them. What I found was a serious WG product. It is the SP Tech flagship, The Revelation.

B&W got a start after the rebuilding efforts of World War II as a radio and electronics shop. As the story goes, after supplying local schools and churches with PA equipment, John started having to repair them in the workshop in the backyard, and founded B&W Loudspeakers, Ltd in 1966.
