    My Prattquake SUB has shipped

I had Andrew Pratt build me a super sub. It took him awhile because parts weren't readily available, but it is finished now and on its way from Winnipeg to New Glasgow. It has a 12" driver and a 1000watt amp plate that will replace a Boston Acoustics 10" with 100watt amp in my home theater. It will basically be used for movies and I can't wait to fire up U571. I'll let everyone here know my thoughts after I've had a chance to play with it. My BA sub weighs a little over 50 lbs and the Prattquake weighs 103 lbs. That should tell us something right there.

I hope you like it george...like you though having our HT's in the basement means that shaking a concrete foundation isn't nearly as easy as those with wooden floors...still this little guy had my walls shaking quite a bit and you might consider moving the old 10" behind your main seats to help with the kick in the pants feeling

Andrew, I presently have a Yamaha 8" 75 watt sub in the rear. I am going to move the BA there and use the Yamaha with my speakers upstairs that I use for music. I'm just hoping that that BA doesn't cancel out the Prattquake. The Yamaha didn't do this to the BA so I'm hoping I can match your baby with the BA without cancellation problems.

Jason, you could do worse than have Mr. Pratt build a sub for you. Just one thing: he sure is fussy. But that's the way you want it, don't you.

Jason it would be easier to ship west as well as Greyhound will take a larger parcel all the way to victoria...going East you're limited to 75 lbs past Toronto...still weight would greatly depend on the style you wanted

Actually Burke, Andrew forgot to mention that out west we actually use Moose at times as the snow can get so deep as soon as you hit the Canadian border that sometimes, if using dogs, they just aren't tall enough and get stuck. I've already had to have a couple deliveries to my igloo this year via Moose.

Well I'm not that great on reviewing audio stuff, but let me tell you, I swear I have a totally new speaker setup. The blend of the PRATTQUAKE with my BA mains is absolutely astounding. I played several test discs including some scenes from LOTR #1, Goldeneye, The 5th Element, U571, and a few others. Now let me tell you, U571 was S C A R Y .

But what I really find amazing is how much cleaner dialogue is. I didn't realize how much " chestiness" my Boston Acoustics Sub was causing with my mains.Really, everything I play is like hearing it for the first time, and hearing it right. And the sub does not thump in the really low low end, rather it, well it sorta makes the teeth chatter a bit, but overall the low end is much tighter. The sub does not intrude until it is called upon to do its job, and you really swear it is coming from every one of my 7 speakers.

Mr. Pratt really knows his stuff when it comes to making subs. But, I warn you, if he makes one for you, you may have to arrange for two strongmen to help you place it. Thankfully, mine only weighed 104 lbs ( Only ? ) and , though I had to be careful not to put out my back, I was able to move the big beauty with not too much trouble.

Thanks Mr. Pratt for a job well done. I would have had to pay twice as much for a sub like this if I had bought it from an audio retailer.

                            The Prattquake ? :5: :5: :5: :T

That is great George. There is nothing like realizing good bass. It does make the entire system come to life. Like you said, everything in the spectrum tightens up. Glad you are happy. Enjoy!

I hope so, Jason. He missed his calling. Instead of working with ducks, he should be working with drivers and amps, etc. He's one talented young man. I was fortunate enough to have met him, and his lovely wife Glanda, personally a couple of summers ago.

Incidently George...here is the only way to dismantle a Prattquake sub box

step 1...put on saftey shield (always be safe)
                                                  step 2...get out big hammer
step 3 ...beat box repeatedly until big box finally gives in,

                                                  I was gentle....really. :B

Actually...they will become either a smaller sub...since the original boxes were simply too huge... or my next set of speaks!

He had punched them full of holes before I got them anyway

(sorry if the pics are a little blurry...it was getting dark and the camera is only a 1.3 MP...with a weak flash).

I didn't find much of a difference with the different EQ settings and find that just a little boost to the gain and a wide bandwidth setting seems to do the trick just fine.

I did find though that I had to experiment a little with position. My BA sub was positioned between the center and right speaker. The Prattquake didn't work well there. Because my right speaker is at the bottom of my screen, which is only about a foot or so from the right wall, I can't use the right corner so I tried a position about 3 feet up the right wall. It was a little better but I found bass in the sweetspot was louder when I stood. Now it is positioned between the center and left front speakers and this seems to be the spot . Whether I sit or stand, the bass is the same level now in the sweetspot.

What I really like about this sub, though, is how well it blends with the rest of my speaker system, and it doesn't thump, but it sure can THUD.
