AVP DTS Music and DTS Film Modes

Does anyone out there know the difference between the DTS modes that are now available on the AVP? When I put in a DTS DVD, the AVP seems to default to DTS Music, despite the fact that I have a movie in the player . One would think that defaulting to Movie mode would make more sense... I don't have many DTS DVD's and haven't really played around much with the different DTS modes, but tonight I got curious and am now a bit confused (Film and Music modes don't seem to sound different, at least in a quick comparison). So what's the deal?

Geoffrey, perhaps you can go to a setup screen to set the default sound mode for digital 5.1 sources? My Lexicon has a setting for 5.1, stereo, and analog sources, so that you can set what soundmode it starts when it encounters a particular format.

We can check with Proceed if we need to.

Nope, I checked the setup options. There's nothing specific to Dolby Digital or DTS in the options. There's a "Mode Defaults" menu that has settings for Discrete, Dolby Pro Logic, etc. The options under Discrete apply to both Dolby Digital and DTS and only give you options for adjusting default levels of the speakers, sub on or off, and THX on or off (which for DTS would be in addition to Film mode, as there are 3 DTS modes - Music, Film, and Film w/THX).

I'll fire off an email to Proceed and see what they have to say. I'd call the dealer, but they never seem to have any answers to these types of questions .

I just checked the latest version of the manual online at Madrigal's site. They give the following explanation of the various DTS modes:

•DTS/Music : straight DTS decoding without further processing, most appropriate for DTS music recordings.

•DTS/Movies : DTS decoding with a +10 dB boost on the low frequency effects channel (sometimes called the “.1 ” channel); may be used with DTS-encoded movie soundtracks.

•DTS/THX : the same as DTS/Movies,but with the additional post-processing offered by THX 5.1; usually the best choice for DTS-encoded movie soundtracks.

I'm in the process of sending Proceed an email asking about the status of 24/96 support, how to default to DTS Film mode, and about support for the new 6.1 DD and DTS formats.
