You can use the USB port to plug in a jump drive, or USB storage. This is one of the ways you can update the firmware on the unit.. You can also put media files (video and audio) on the drive and play them.

It is not however, like a DAC, where the USB port or other would receive a digital stream. It actually reads the file and processes it internally.

lovely setup stuofsci02, though trying to figure how it relates to original topic. but still, sweet setup. I wish I had room to give my system the room it needs.

Thanks Lex! The pictures don't relate to the original topic, however the OP asked me many questions about how I setup my speakers and listening room, so I figured a picture would save a lot of typing..

Well shoot, I'd really like to have as system going from my mac with iTunes (and potentially PureMusic) to an Asynchronous DAC to my system... Any suggestions on a nice affordable DAC with Asynchronous Mode?

Yeah... But that is cool.... I used to two have two NAD PE2200 amps bridged (400 watts). One for each speaker.

I always used to says things like "my NADs are awesome", "look at my huge pair of NADs", "my NADs are just getting warmed up" etc. etc. etc.

You can think up a million of those, and maybe it was just me, but it was funny every time.

My gut feeling is that they will handle bluegrass well but I am not sure of the latter needs.

Characteristics of a natural, neutral, and accurate speaker are very important to me. This is not what I am referring to. I speak of soundstage and detail. Yes I fully believe the 685s have great value, but I could use a little bit more. I am a very analytical listener. I'm not bashing them. You get what you pay for, if not more. I'm just developing an ear and opinion.

I do not. Value is determined by price (performance/price if you will). The lower the price, the better the value. This does not mean discounted speakers give the best value, but they are certainly of better value than what you pay at the original price for that specific model.

Agreed. The reason for my search.
By the Sonus Faber Toy for their enjoyable sound and add a sub that you like as a compliment. The setup will work on bluegrass, folk, rock, disco and of course movies.
                            Good luck.

I have found even the older series Sonus faber to be quite versatile. The newer speakers I believe are even more robust in their ability than the older soft dome concert series speakers. I use 7 Sonus faber, but older, so there's no basis for comparison really. But I'll say I am a fan for sure, love the speakers sound and design typically.

I have sonus faber Extrema, Concerto Grand Piano rears, Concerto sides, and a pair of Concertinos for a small spare system.
