I was thinking about purchasing an Apple TV to use as a media type server for my living room. I will be using it for is music, pictures, and the occasional movie. What are your guy's opinions on it, and do you know of any alternatives to it (preferably under $500). I really think that the HD feature is cool, and since I will not be buying anymore HD DVD's in a few months, I was kind of looking for an alternative. For some reason I am holding off on buying a blue-ray player. Thanks for your Help!

I run all my video, DVD's, HD movies from broadcasts (Eyetv), pictures and audio from a Mac Pro to a 720p LCD projector. A mac mini would do also and you would have DVD and would give you a complete Mac. I never rent movies from iTunes. The AppleTV only makes sense if you have a family with many Macs and want to share media in the living room or if you don't have a Mac and still want iTunes. It is very convenient though if you have media on different macs. If you already have a Mac , just hook it up directly and start Frontrow. (I know the HD rentals are AppleTV only, what a bust)Originally posted by ryan.devryI was thinking about purchasing an Apple TV to use as a media type server for my living room. by HedgeHogHowdy,
So I got the new Apple TV yesterday and put it in my system. It's sure is tiny. While awaiting this device, I ripped my whole CD collection into Apple Lossless and stuffed it in a QNAP server (they have an iTunes Server built-in). However, silly Apple decided that those aren't...-
