    Question about linear PCM vs. bit stream, freezing PS3

    I was reading this thread about my PS3 locking up during BR playback.

    One solution was to switch from linear PCM to bit stream. Can anyone tell me about these two methods?

    Even better, can anyone tell me how to stop my PS3 from freezing?

    If you want full HD audio, you have to use LPCM, otherwise the PS3 transcodes to a lossy format for bitstream output over HDMI. I'm sure they will add HD bitstream output, but that also requires an HDMI 1.3 AVR.

    Can you give some more info on the freezing?

      I sure can and thank you for the reply littlesaint. For the last month or so most of the blu rays I watch do not play perfectly. The movie will freeze and not start up again unless I skip the scene. Trying to skip the scene isn't simple at times. The PS3 takes quite a bit of time before jumping forward. If I take the disc out and put it back in, the problem occurs at the same spot. I could swear this problem started when my PS3 automattically updated when I tried playing Guitar Hero 3 for the first time which was around Christmas.

      I originally thought it was the Block Buster rentals that were causing the problems. Looking at the discs, most seem pristine. This problem is starting to drive me nuts.

          Sorry, I am not sure. I will have to check when I get home. If you are familiar with the PS3, I will assume that I am using the latest firmware available on December 24th.

            The firmware before the last one caused my machine to freeze a lot. In fact there were an awful lot of machines that this happened to. the, tie most recent one fixed all that. Can't remember the versions but the last one gave divx playback functionality...

                That firmware has been surpassed by atleast 2 that I can recall.

                I think they are on 2.1 or so.

                I just bought my PS3 this month and I have not seen any issues with the BR playback on mine.

                  PS3 Output settings to Parasound C2

                  My PS3 is connected to my Parasound C2 via Optical Out. This works very well for the sound. However I wonder which audio output options I can safely select on the PS3, I see the following options;

                  1. DD5.1 ---> already selected and works
                  2. DTS 5.1 ---> already selected and...

                  RSP-1068 with PS3 Blu-ray optical audio?

                  Hi,

                  I get DD and DTS with regular DVDs and games. When playing a Blu-ray disc, it reverts to Prologic. PS3 optical out is set to bitstream (tried linear PCM with same result).

                  Thanks a lot! for any advice...

                  Hey all,

                  Have you ever ordered something on line and get something somewhat different than ordered when delivered?. I want to use my headphones via my headphone amp to listen to BD and DVD movies and since my Rotel does not pass digital signals to it's analog out's, I was forced to buy...

                  1068 - Ps3 - Mp3
                  by RotelNewbie
                  I must be losing my mind. I've got a PS3 streaming MP3 over wireless from my home media server. Hooked up to my Rotel RSP-1068 via optical digital. I could have sworn, when I first hooked this up, that the Rotel displayed "MP3" as the detected format on the front display. I remember thinking,...
