    Receiver or pre/pro and amp?

    I am currently working on building a B&W 60X S3 series based 5.1 system. At this time a 7.1 doesn't interest me. I have the 5, just need the .1 now.

    I have:
    * Samsung HL-T5087S LED DLP TV.
    * Toshiba HD-A30 HD-DVD player - HDMI to TV
    * Xbox 360 - component, L/R audio to TV
    * Satellite receiver. - component, LR audio to TV
    * Pioneer 5.1 receiver, unhooked for now.

    All my stuff, as stated above, is just hooked to the TV, using the TV speakers for now. My receiver only has one optical in put, and no HDMI, so it really can't do much for me.

    I wanted my TV to handle all the switching, and just pipe one audio output to my receiver, but my TV can't do all that.

    Since I have what most would argue quality speakers, I want to do them justice by getting a quality component.

    Finally, my point:
    I want to replace the Receiver, I just don't know if I should get a "better" one or get a pre/pro and a nice seperate amp.

    (note: I know this question has been answered I'm sure, but I had all this typed out before I realized that my TV couldn't do the audio switching. My original question was to have the TV switch everything, or the receiver)

    I've found that manufacturers charge a premium for standalone processors over essentially electronically equivalent receivers. Thus, if you still want separates, many folks will get a separate amp, but then run a receiver into it as a preamp.

      Also, with your B&W 6XX speakers, I'd recommend getting a used Rotel RMB-1075. An all around great and affordable amp that matches well with your speakers.

        Yea, I have been eyeing that exact model. I just spent my last penny to get an LCR600 S3 sorrento and that Samsung TV. I wonder if/when manufacturers will stop putting composite video inputs on receivers, or even s-video.

          Receiver vs true pre amp comparison

          I know this could likely have gone in the Club Rotel but I wanted to show people that receivers can make decent pre amps in some cases....

          As luck would have it I am presently lucky enough to own both the Rotel 1055 receiver and the Rotel 1066 pre amp. For those that don't know about...

          Hi, i need some help.
          In order to get Home Cinema sound i´m trying to connect my receiver (Rotel RSX-1057) to my stereo set up (Audiolab 8200 CDQ (Pre-amp)/Audiolab 8200 P (Power)). On the Rotel i´m using the Pre-out (Front Left and Front Right), and on the Audiolab Pre-amp i´m using the...

          so-so receiver with a decent amp

          I have an opportunity to buy myself a used pair of 802D's. Unfortunately I do not have the cash available to buy a top of the line Classe / Macintosh / Bryston type of amp at this time. What I do have is a brand new Pioneer Elite VSX-84TSXi ...... now I know you audiophiles are probably cringing at...

          Pre-amp Modification Review
          by wkhanna
          The following is a rather winded review of the effects resulting from the modifications that were recently finished on my nearly 30 year old Carver C-19 tube hybrid pre-amp with a built-in phono pre-amp.

          Tom is the owner of the shop and creator of the modification specifications. He is...

          Need a "cheap" reciever to use as a pre-amp for 1 -2 years
          by jthomp27
          I currently have CDM 1NT's and am about to purchase a Rotel 1075 AMP to drive them. This will leave me somewhat low on funds, so I was wondering if any of you have a recommendation on a relatively cheap receiver/pre-amp that I can use for the next year or so until I buy a higher end pre-amp with hi-res...
