How much source software is HDMI encoded? Is this something I need to be concerned about when purchasing a replacement Pre/Pro?
Do I Need HDMI ???

Mike, I'm not sure what you mean. No "software" is really "HDMI encoded". Now to use some of the current sound technologies, you'll have to have a way for them to be decoded and transmitted to your pre/pro. You could decode the new high-res formats in your player and use the multichannel analogs, or HDMI to transmit the decoded PCM signal. Or even HDMI to transmit the raw audio signals over HDMI 1.3 to a new 1.3 pre/pro.

Well, we're safe for now. Thank goodness we're in a bowling alley.

I haven't looked into A/V formats much since I bought my old 5.1 processor, which was current at the time! From what I understood, a pre/pro must have HDMI in/out in order to take advantage of the technology. Are you saying that ALL players with HDMI have decoded analog outputs? Is there any advantage to having a pre/pro with HDMI inputs then? Are there quality or adjustablility issues to be concerned with that a good pre/pro will take care of?
It seems advantageous to send the raw HDMI signal to the pre/pro so I have more control. Is this correct?- Bottom

by gritSomeone brought an interesting point to my attention the other day. Digital rights management with respect to audio. HDMI exists almost only because someone became concerned that DVI lacked the ability to control content, and allowed users to make a perfect 1:1 copy of digital video material.

I'm just jumping back into HT (component video was considered the best connection, since I've been in the market) and I've started looking at moderately priced pre/pro units (namely Rotel). The big negative seems to be dated component connectivity, specifically lack of 1.3 HDMI ports, or in some cases...-
