What are you using for line conditioning and surge protection?

My latest conumdrum is what to get for surge protection and/or line conditioning. I have all the usual HT stuff: amp, pre/pro, DLP pj. My power fluctuates a lot during the summer when the HVAC cycles on and off. We also get thunder storms in the spring, so lightening is a worry too.

I don't know what to get as I've seen prices range from around $200 to $1,000 for a line conditioner with UPS. :E

Is anyone willing to share what they use and why you made that choice?

I have a Monster HTS5000, bought it because of price, mostly. The really nice units from PS Audio and the like are too much money for me.

Belkin PureAv PF30 for the HT system and DIY balanced power with surge protection for the 2-channel system.

Just some relatively inexpensive APC and TrippLite surge supressors.

I have voltage sags from about 122V down to about 112V or so when my electric plenum heaters kick in (~70A @ 240V). While my lights do momentarily dim, I have yet to see any effect of these voltage sags in my TV picture or hear any change in my audio.

Had Tripp Lite before and now using Belkin's PF60(bought new for around 200 before). Both did a good job compare to the monster HTS 2000 which I had before(blew my whole computer's PSU, mobo, cpu and even ram) for a 3second jump. And a linksys router before that as well.

Go for the Belkin's PureAV series if you can afford it(still relatively cheap, 150-250ish depends on model). It can have the components switchedrather than always on. The electricity goes off you have to press manually to let the component go back up. This is a big plus as you don't know when is the next black out coming, it could be next year or 10seconds later.

bought the PureAV PF30 for $100
what i like about it is if the power goes off the trigger can only manually be turned on (ie wont turn on when power turns back on). thus its design makes it more immune to surges before circuitry is even figured in

used to have a monster one that retailed for $500 but it was too big for my rack and didn't fit the aesthetic

if i had my choice it would be the apc ht regulated stuff
nothing does what it does for less than 1k and its only $500

Sounds like the PureAV stuff is pretty good. Monster is pretty popular as well.

I am using (2) AVS 2000, 1 for each tower. Also HTS 7000 for odds and ends and a HTS 3600 for subs. Both AVS 2000's are on dedicated circuits. Seems to work alright.

the damaging part is the skipe or spikes that come when the power goes back on

I agree :T I have some older APC units, great quality, great performance, great customer service.... I really can't say enough good things about them or their products :T

Prime example of their customer service:

At work we have some of their PC Smart-UPS units hooked up to our servers. One of the batteries recently died prematurely (but out of warranty) so our IT calls about ordering a new battery....they're sending us an entirely new unit for free!! 8O :T

If we have expensive or even the not-so expensive AV equipment we'll just make sure they're protected coz these are valuable gems to us, you'll never know when spikes, fluctuations & power outages will occur. MONSTER has a lot of good surge protectors, line conditioners & voltage regulators available, you could check out also POWER AUDIO INDUSTRIES, PS Audio, CHANG LIGHTSPEED & APC (if you want extra back up power). This decision is almost as overwhelming as what PJ to get. I'm going to check out the companys listed above and make a decision.

I am using a DIY balanced power and filtering unit designed by our incredibly helpful Jon and Thomas.

No surge protection, but it certainly cleans up the power. Even my two dish network PVRs can't find an excuse to glitch.

Used to have a Monster AVS2000/HTPS7000 combo. Did a good job but at idle pulled 1.4A even with nothing plugged in. Also it only offered 420w off balanced power. So really it was limited. Ended up getting a sweet deal on a PS Audio P1000 power plant, so I sold off the Monster gear. Maybe a little biased but checkout the following link for a comparison off different gear and what they have too offer.

Personally I wouldn't buy any Monster products due to their business practices and philosophy of advertising dollars over product investment but that's just me :B

I have a Monster HTPS 3600II if I recall.
I like it, fits the bill quite nicely. Currently see a 120 volts sign on the front of it :T
