    Hook-Up Questions

    Hello, Everyone!
I just purchased a Runco 50" plasma and the Denon DVD5910ci, and I'm having some connectivity issues that I hope I can get some help or clarity on.

I cannot seem to get a good solid or clear picture from the Denon when using component cable (Transparent) viewing a new out-of-the-box directors cut version of Last of the Mohicans. I'm just not satisfied with the image I'm seeing with this connection. Dealer suggests that Runco may hi-light inferior DVD productions.

I can't even get a stable image when using the HDMI cable from the Denon to a DVI coverter to the Runco. It seems the player is cycling through some program or process and the image that does come through is intermittent and full of static or what looks like interference.

I was told that the Denon does not produce a 1080i signal through the DVI output, and that only if the 5910 has the latest firmware will I get a 1080i signal from HDMI - Runco has only HDMI input.

Runco dealer says the Runco rep strongly suggests using component cable and 480i output from Denon and use Runco's processor to dazzle me with the image.

I know I should probably try a few other dvds out as well.

I bought the Denon for both it's audio capabilities and video capabilities, and I may have naively thought that the higher the output, the better the picture.

    Comments or suggestions, anyone?

    Thanks

    Jim

    Well of course he does...

From what you explained, the way I understand it is that you've got more than just a picture quality issue. If it's intermittent and has static then something must be amiss.

Can you try the Denon on another TV? That would help narrow down the issue. It's very possible the problem is in the component to DVI converter as well. Do you have another display with a HDMI or DVI input you can test it with?

For what you paid for that combo, someone from the dealer should help you out. I'd insist on getting what you have running rather than forking out more dough on a Runco processor/scaler.

id imagine 480p looks bad as on any hd tv
you have the option of both dvi and hdmi on that older denon dvd player
im assuming you are using a 720p runco as i couldnt find a 1080p on there website

i do wonder why you bought top of the line equipment last year now
id also be ticked off that they tried to sell you a scaller rather than help you (that alone would make me return it no matter what they said once you did)
my advice would be to return both and get the current denon along with a 1080p plasma
but assuming you wish to keep the equipment try running just dvi from the dvd player to the screen (im a little confused with your wording and think you may have stated hdmi where you ment dvi)
      run it 720p
if there is a problem talk to denon first as there may be a firmware update
but i strongly suggest other eequipment unless you paid very reduced prices

You picked one of the best plasma displays and one of the best DVD players you can buy. You can definitely get a very high quality image with that combo. Runco will suggest that you do use the 480i component video RCA input and let their scaler do the processing....this indeed delivers a "better" image more often than not (I have seen it myself in the field as well as at Runco academy). However with the 5910's high end video processing, you may find an equal or "better" image using one of the digital outputs. From your description, it sounds like you may have a problem with one of the units...I would take the DVD player to the dealer and connect it to their Runco 50" and see if it acts the same....this would be easy and an effective way to diagnose what your problem is. Also try other DVDs.....some DVDs are just horrible transfers to begin with.

        Good luck!

I actually read almost all of the 85 page DVD manual, and went back to the dealer for a proper DVI cable. Man, do I feel stupid! That solved all of my video troubles - the image from the DVD player is awesome, as it should be! I think the installer might have been burned out at the end of the evening and misread the DVD manual!

Now, if only I could figure out how to get SACDs to play through all channels instead of just stereo!

did you or your install hook up the six analog connections to the multi channel in on your receiver/processor. there is a sacd setup button on the denon, pressing it changes the sacd output from stereo, multi channel, or cd if your using hybrid sacd disc. select multi channel, put your receiver into the analog multi channel in mode and you should have surround sound sacd.

              Locomk:
I did indeed connect the 6 channels on the SACD to Multi input on the Rotel, and I tried futzing with that SACD control button on the player. I even tried a few SACD discs incase one of them happened to be a three channel or even two channel recording. The odd thing was the dvd display read the 5 channels, and the Rotel indicated there was a muti-channel signal, but I could hear nothing from any speaker except the stereo L&R. This happened at different parts of the disc, on different discs. One thing I must confess is that I have NO understanding of that SACD button that cycles through Multi, Stereo(?) and CD????
My questions have been relayed to the Denon rep, so I hope to have solution soon!
