HDMI downconvert??

Hi guys, new here, nice place h: Anyhow, i was a sucker and bought a HDTV when they came out. It's a nice Hitachi, rear projection, still looks great. Only thing is, Component vid is the best input. I was looking to upgrade my reciever, got an old (6 year?) Yamaha, 5.1, DD/THX, I was wondering if there was a reciever out there, that could take a HDMI input, and send the video the my TV with component? Thanks for the help

I don't think there are any receivers that will do this, but an external video processor might. Someone who has experience with such processors will surely come along and clarify this. (the DVDO processor website would probably have an answer) The downside is such processors are typically more expensive than most receivers.

What are your objectives? Do you want to be able to watch HD DVD, or BD? Or is your objective Satellite or cable HD? I am pretty sure you can get HD satellite through component. not sure about cable. But you will potentially have real issues with HD DVD or BD.

I doubt as well that any receiver can handle this.

My cable (Time Warner) does 1080i via component hook-up , with digital coax or Toslink for audio (hi def channels in Dolby Digital). Box is a Scientific Atlanta , and they also use Pioneer .

ok, well you could do Xbox 360 with component, or VGA converted to component.

However, again the receiver question is a tough one. IF it can be done, your in DVDO's territory probably.

Basically, before i upgraded my amp i wasnt really sure if there was one out there, since most of the higher end will 'upconvert' to HDMI out, i thought maybe the opposite could be done. As far as the difference between optical out and the HDMI for audio, is the difference neglible? (wheres the spell check? ) besides the obvious 5.1 to 7.1...

hdmi requires the use of hdcp. without a tv that uses hdmi that also has hdcp (high bandwidth digital copyright protection) hdmi will not work. there are no receivers that can get rid of the hdcp signal a hdmi signal carries. but all hd cable boxes satellite, hd dvd/blu ray players and the xbox360 will output up to 1080I via component output.

optical and hdmi currently carry the same sound quality levels when it comes to home theater surround. some receivers with hdmi connections can receive two channel linear pcm signals via hdmi that is not supported via optical. once hdmi 1.3 is implemented into home theater receivers, hdmi will be able to carry uncompressed surround sound as well and dolby d hd and dts hd. in your situation with your current tv. you can get a receiver that will up convert to component video. so you can use composite, s-video and componet and out a single component cable to your tv.

Indeed, unfortunately it seems that you are pretty much stuck with component connections for the time being. I would probably wait for HDMI 1.3 receivers, which are scheduled for mid-year introduction, just to ensure that you are not behind the technology curve.
