DVD Player - Older used or new?

I am used to purchasing older equipment used to get the higher end equipment I couldn't afford when new, but this changed for me recently when I bought a digital SLR. The newer cameras were better and cheaper than the ones that came before. Is this the same for DVD players? Will a current < $100 player match an earlier one that cost 2x that amount?

My needs are modest in terms of video - I plan to get a new TV soon, but it won't be anything real fancy, just something 24-27" with component inputs to replace a 10-yr old 21" Sanyo. But I want the best audio quality I can get for my stereo-only setup (Onkyo stereo receiver) and I do not plan on getting into HT sound anytime soon.

So which new player should I get for $150 or less, or which might be the biggest bang for my Stereo buck used for the same price range?

    Thanks!

Have a 970 on the way. Also an Olevia 323v 23" HDTV (don't watch TV so I won't mind the lack of a HDTV tuner).

Merry Xmas to me . Er, us, I meant the whole family of course .

just buy a direct tv hd box and use its tuner (no you dont have to subscribe)

also dont use the "mixed" stereo output on the oppo- use the l/r
