AV Rack - enclosed or open

    hi all,

just thought i'd run a poll to see people's preference for AV racks - enclosed or open and what you see the advantages of the two being.

    regards,

    Umm... both?

Mines enclosed with a front door on the bottom half, if I sit for quite a while and have everything on, i will leave the door open, other then that, its closed.. Minimize the dust collection

My theater rack is open. Just too many big things to put back panels on it. Generates too much heat to put front doors on it. And if I'm not going to have those, no real point in putting side panels on.

My bedroom rack is fully enclosed, although I had to use Salamander's extended back panel to have room for the equipment.

Mine was purchased open and will stay that way. This is for better airflow. Lots of components do not like to deal with a closed in space. A simple fan doesn't do the trick.

          Open... for strictly practical reasons.

It should be noted that my home isn't exactly show-worthy. ops:

But my music systems kick some serious butt.

          Ya gotta have priorities. :B

I definitely choose open as well, primarily due to ventilation reasons.

            Peace and blessings,

is dust a problem with open racks? also, is there such a thing as an understated, stealth looking open rack?

Open, because the dog broke the door off it's hinges while the cat was running under it (the door was open during said chase).

With me its both. I prefer an open rack but was forced to install doors because of a child in the home. The (Salamander Synergy) doors have a two-part hinge that unlatches to allow quick temporary removal, so that can I take them off when doing any serious listening and put them back on when I'm done. With regard to dust, in MY experience over the years I have never found doors to make that much of a difference in preventing dust accumulation. No matter what you do, dust will find a way to collect on your components. YMMV.

My open rack does have issues with dust but nothing a swiffer can't fix.

                              HI,
Open. Both systems. Major dust problem. I should be allowed to vote twice.

What's a "swiffer"? Is it something I need?

my RSX-1055 is in an open rack and never heats...

my RA-972 integrated is in a closed cabinet and is way too hot...have to move it to the upper area of cabinet when I will get the 603's...

You should move your RA-972 immediately. Heat damage is accumulative and will shorten the life of your equipment.

I cant wait to have a house so I can put in a rack. I take racks seriously. Middle Atlantic all the way. And if you want something "portable", Salamander stuff is really cool and customizable.
