    Sax Gods

So um... not that many people seem to post here... Hey Bluespower, Bigburner, Hanna, George, Dave......

Still I know this is my place. Heh. So I'm going to keep it up.

Sax Gods... Right now, right here. I'm listening to Hummin' by Cannonball Adderley.

It's in his soul jazz phase, not the hard bop. I like both, but I've been in a funky mood ever since we started talking about Root Down.

    So yeah... support your jazz.

    Hummin'

It hums like a live wire.

I'd like to keep this thread focused on the sax. if anyone out there has some players they think the world should know about, this probably isn't the place to shout it out, but I promise I will check out whatever is mentioned.

List the song or record you think best features the artist.

(by the way, Hummin' is not that song for Cannonball, Sticks off of Mercy Mercy Mercy might be... then again anything he did with Miles Davis might fit the bill too.)

I like Jenna Jameson, Briana Banks. . . oh, you said sax :

Two of my favorites are the James'. Bob and Boney. They aren't the "hard" jazz types, but they push all the right buttons for me. Ronnie Laws is another favorite.

David Sanborn. I saw him recently on the DVD "Eric Clapton & Friends in Concert: A Benefit for the Crossroads". He and Clapton teamed up to do a sizzling version of "Little Wing".

Anyone heard of Tom Scott & the L.A. Express? Great sax. They were Joni Mitchell's backing band at one stage.

Yep... If I remember correctly, they are her backing band on the live album Miles of Aisles. Her version of Woodstock is on there, (Which CSN&Y covered) and it's umm... nice? I like it but I like the cover better.

I have to 2nd Julian 'Cannonball' Adderlley.
                    And add: John Coltrane.
Still, not be cliche, but you have to mention Charlie "The Bird" Parker.

Not to be a stickler or anything... but could you all name a song or album that showcases, to the best of your knowledge, the players talents?

I mean, I have the entire Coltrane Impulse recordings... I have a lot of Wayne Shorter..... I have tons of Parker, Hodges, Rollins, Stitts, Gonzalez, Young, Hawkins, Desmond, and Webster stuff.... but Ireally want to know what song or album turned you guys on to a sax player, or still turns you on when you listen to them.

                        Give me details people!!!!

A bit of desperation showing there Eric, but seeing you're so keen...

The guy who turned me on to sax was Wilton Felder in The Crusaders. I'd go for "Scratch" which is a live album from 1974.

                          Nigel.

Wayne Shorter = Etcetera (ETC) I love that album... Ju Ju is amazing, anything 1964 to 1974 is pretty spot on, even "native Dancer" which is a little lighter is cool

Michael Brecker = "Some Skunk Funk" is a must have (MUST HAVE)

                                  Hi,

Here's one for you. I was listening to this earlier and it reminded me to post it up here for you

One of my favourite sax albums is a magnificent piece of work.

It's called 'Gerry Mulligan meets Ben Webster'. Says it all really.

Now it's great on CD but you should source it on 180g vinyl (Speakers Corner Records, www.speakerscorner.de) , and if you do you're onto a winner.

In fact they have a great selection of 'audiophile' recordings. Not cheap but really worth it. Plenty more from Ben Webster too.

                                  V.
                                  Vincent.

I don't want the world. I just want your half.
