    Memorable phrases from songs

As many songs as I've listened to, there are some that have phrases that just stick in my mind. Why? Memorable? Profound? Catchy? Silly? Applicable to me? I couldn't tell you, but they are there. I was listening to Steely Dan's Can't Buy A Thrill album and one of those lines is in the song Dirty Work:
like a castle in his corner
    in a medieval game
    I foresee terrible trouble
but I stay here just the same
Do you have any of those phrases that stick in your head?

This is a pretty cool idea for a thread....... One song that always comes to mind for me when I think of lyrics that have always stuck with me was a Queensryche song "Another Rainy Night (Without You)

Strange how laughter looks like crying with no sound
Raindrops taste like tears, without the pain

I'm sure more will come to me.......

Ooh, so many choices... I've always thought the 2nd verse of Pink Floyd's "Run Like Hell" to be funny:

Cause if they catch you in the back seat trying to pick her locks,
They're gonna send you back to mother in a cardboard box.

Yes, lots, but it'll take some time for them to come to me to post here.

For whatever reason, the first one that comes to my mind is a line from Meatloaf of all people, that struck me as poignant/poetic.

"She used her body just like a bandage... she used my body just like a wound."

One of my favorite songs, having grown up on Neil Diamond from my dad, is "Play Me". It's also pretty much my favorite to sing at Karaoke, etc. It begins with:

          She was morning
          I was nighttime
I one day woke up to find her lying... beside my bed
I softly said... come take me
          ......
          You are the sun
          I am the moon
          You are the words
          I am the tune
          Play Me...

So many lines are etched into my brain from U2, my favorite band of all time, of course!

From "When Love Comes to Town":
I was there when the crucified my Lord
I held the scabbard when the soldier drew his sword
I threw the dice when they pierced his side
But I've seen love conquer the great divide

From "Yahweh" (I interpret this to be referring to 9/11, and submitting to God's sovereignty)
          Take this city
A city should be shining on a hill
          Take this city
          If it be your will
          What no man can own,
          No man can take
          Take this heart
          And make it break
          CHRIS

Well, we're safe for now. Thank goodness we're in a bowling alley.

And now for something COMPLETELY different as they say.
'The wind peed through the willows...my love, my pocket, deep within...'
            Capt. Beefart

I don't know why, but that wacky line has been lodged in my brain for decades. That and Edith Bunker singing the intro to 'All in the Family'.

The chorus from Manfred Mann's Earth Band 1977 hit 'Blinded by the Light' that noone could figure out what he was singing:scratchhead: Until we checked Springsteen's album he took the song from for the words, "Blinded by the light, cut loose like a deuce, another runner in the night". Everyone had their own version of the line but noone was right. And it was impossible to forget the song! -Russ

My favorite chorus by Steely Dan is from the song 'Time out of Mind'.

Tonight when I chase the dragon
the water will change to cherry wine
the silver will turn to gold

That's the way he sang it at Woodstock (just watched -- and listened to -- "Jimi Hendrix Live at Woodstock" this afternoon).

Bob Dylan has penned quite a number of amazing lyrics, but few are quite as memorable (and chilling) as this excerpt from "Positively 4th Street":

"You see me on the street
                                  You always act surprised
You say, "How are you?" "Good luck"
                                  But you don't mean it

When you know as well as me
                                  You'd rather see me paralyzed
Why don't you just come out once
                                  And scream it"

And sheer poetry from "Mr. Tambourine Man":

"Then take me disappearin' through the smoke rings of my mind,
Down the foggy ruins of time, far past the frozen leaves,
The haunted, frightened trees, out to the windy beach,
Far from the twisted reach of crazy sorrow.

Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free,
Silhouetted by the sea, circled by the circus sands,
With all memory and fate driven deep beneath the waves,
Let me forget about today until tomorrow."

"Windmills of you Mind" on the soundtrack of The Thomas Crown Affair (words & music by Alan & Marilyn Bergman & Michel Legrand -- most memorably recorded later by Dusty Springfield) is a series of interrelated word pictures, including:

"Like a tunnel that you follow
To a tunnel of it's own
Down a hollow to a cavern
Where the sun has never shone
Like a door that keeps revolving
                                  In a half forgotten dream
Or the ripples from a pebble
                                  Someone tosses in a stream."

but the one that slaps you in the face is:

"When you knew that it was over
                                  Were you suddenly aware
That the autumn leaves were turning
To the color of her hair"

What you DON'T say may be held against you...

                                    I am gross and perverted
                                    I'm obsessed 'n deranged
                                    I have existed for years
                                    But very little had changed
I am the tool of the Government
                                    And industry too
For I am destined to rule
                                    And regulate you

I may be vile and pernicious
                                    But you can't look away
I make you think I'm delicious
With the stuff that I say
I am the best you can get
                                    Have you guessed me yet?
I am the slime oozin' out
                                    From your TV set

You will obey me while I lead you
And eat the garbage that I feed you
Until the day that we don't need you
Don't go for help...no one will heed you
                                    Your mind is totally controlled
It has been stuffed into my mold
And you will do as you are told
Until the rights to you are sold

                                    That's right, folks..

One of my favorites from my college days, I had to put the entire song in for effect.

                                      "The Wind Cries Mary"-Jimi Hendrix

After all the Jacks are in their boxes,
And the Clowns, have all, gone to bed,
You can hear happiness, staggering on down the street,
                                      Footprints dressed in red.

                                      And the Wind, whispers, Mary.

                                      A broom, is drearily sweeping,
Up the broken pieces of yesterday's life,
                                      Somewhere a Queen, is weeping,
Somewhere a King, has no wife.

And the Wind, it cries Mary.

The traffic lights they turn a blue tomorrow,
A shine the emptiness, down on my bed,
                                      The tiny island, sags, downstream,
Because the life it lived, is dead.

                                      And the Wind screams Mary.

                                      Will the wind ever remember?
The names, it has blown in the past,
And with its crutch, its old age, and its wisdom,
It whispers no, this will be the last.

                                      And the Wind cries Mary.

                                      Peace and blessings Mary,

                                      Azeke

Flies all green 'n buzzin' in his dungeon of despair
Prisoners grumble and piss their clothes and scratch their matted hair
A tiny light from a window hole a hundred yards away
                                          Is all they ever get to know about the regular life in the day;
An' it stinks so bad the stones been chokin'
                                          'N weepin' greenish drops

                                                  The last verse of Ruby.....

She's leavin' now 'cause I heard the slammin' of the door
The way I know I've heard it slam one hundred times before
And if I could move I'd get my gun and put her in the ground
                                                  Oh Ruby
Don't take your love to town
                                                  Oh Ruby
                                                  God sakes turn around
                                                  Vincent.

I don't want the world. I just want your half.

This is one that never fails to bring emotion to a listen. Might not be as powerful just in print, but I'm sure anyone who has listened to it can attest to the power of the verse in song.

Oh play me a blue song and fade down the light
I'm sad as a proud man can be sad tonight
Just let me dream on, oh just let me sway
While the sweet violins and the saxophones play
And Miss, you don't know me, but can't we pretend
That we care for each other, till the band reach the end

One step for aching, and two steps for breaking
Waltzing's for dreamers and losers in love
One step for sighing and two steps for crying

Many of his songs have a depth of lyric, instrumentation and performance that few can match. :T

                                                                Found my horse and carriage
Then there is the Jethro Tull song: My God

People -- what have you done --
locked Him in His golden cage.
Made Him bend to your religion --
                                                                Him resurrected from the grave.
He is the god of nothing --
if that's all that you can see.
You are the god of everything --
                                                                He's inside you and me.
                                                                So lean upon Him gently
and don't call on Him to save you
                                                                from your social graces
and the sins you used to waive.

                                                                When the river runs dry

And there's no more toilet paper
