It's Mothers Day today here in New Zealand. I have bought my wife four CDs that I hope she likes. In case she doesn't like them I made sure that I would probably like them.
"Is the Actor Happy?" by Vic Chesnutt
We saw Vic perform on the wonderful Cowboy Junkies "Trinity Revisited" DVD. My wife loved his voice and phrasing so it was just a matter of choosing a good CD. This 2004 album is what I came up with. I'm listening to it right now and it is EXCELLENT.
"Motherland" by Natalie Merchant
We also saw Natalie perform on the Cowboy Junkies DVD. She has a most unusual and striking voice. As an amateur singer I can sing along to most things but her harmonies are beyond me. This 2001 album has copped some criticism for being depressing, but hey, life isn't a bowl of cherries so why should all music be happy? I haven't listened to this one yet.
"Orphans" by Tom Waits
My wife really likes the song "Road to Peace" from this album, and I've wanted a Tom Waits album for some time now, so this 2006 CD was the one that I bought. I haven't listened to it yet.
"Rockferry" by Duffy
Duffy (full name Aimée Duffy) is the sober version of Amy Winehouse. She sounds like Amy Winehouse, but with less slurring. She even dropped Aimée from her stage name in case people thought that she was a Winehouse wannabe. This 2008 release is her debut album. I listened to it this morning and I was quite impressed. It's kind of poppy but I can cope with that if the songs are good, and many of these songs are good.
Nigel.
