A Music Server In Da House - The Sequel

After last year's abortive attempt to implement a Roku Soundbridge music server, I decided to wait a while and let manufacturers get a bit more experience under their belts with these components. Well, I've waited as long as I can, so I just ordered an Olive Opus No5 music server.

One little extra that Olive is running right now, is that they will take (for the No5) 300 of your CDs, clean them and load them as FLAC (free lossless audio codec) files for you at no extra cost! Accordingly, it'll take a couple of days to pull the 300 I want and ship them off to Olive and then another 10 days before they ship the loaded component back so I've got to bide my time.

So David, you're going to put 300 of your most prized CDs into a box and wave goodbye to them? That's faith!

    Nigel.

I have been doing some research on the Olive's, and I am going to wait and see how everything turns out. I am reading and hearing good comments about these.

Good point Nigel. Maybe I'll just send the 300 I least care about. . . nah.

Hi Audiofile. Welcome to The Guide. :welcome:

Is there an upgrade path for those of us that purchased prior to the new system's availability?

Congrats, David, I know you'll enjoy it. I still love my Musica, which I've had for about a year and a half now (I think).

I've read that they've had some delays shipping the new No5 model, but hopefully the rumors are not true.

excuse my lack of knowladge, but what is the difference between this and putting all of your CDs onto something like a Mac Mini. Its an honest question.

Well, all I know came from this thread...but I would contact Olive directly to get the real story.

For those of you who are interested in a music server / CD player...you might want to check this out. The 'audiophile' version of Olive Musica/Symphony. Just announced today, and added to their web site.

A bit steep in price, but wow...

                    Mac Mini as Music Server
                    by mb225
                    Hi all,

I'm looking to move to a high quality digital music server. I'm thinking of using a Mac Mini with a 2TB drive as my base. I need the 2TB drive since I rip all of my music to wav. I have a Cambridge Audio DacMagic and I was planning on connecting the Mac via digital output (USB,...

A Music Server In The House
                    by David Meek
Santa brought me a rather neat present. It's a Roku Labs Soundbridge, model M1001. It's a music server that allows me to stream digital music from the hard drive of my PC to my main sound system. It also lets me stream Internet radio stations too. For what it's worth, I'd never heard of this company...

So after having given up hope of ever seeing a product from Olive (pre-paid a long time ago) they actually surprised me and shipped a unit to me that I received yesterday.

For those of you that does not know what a Olive one is/can do.
It can play audio files from your network,...
