Bluegrass Journey
I watched this DVD on Friday night at a friend's place. It's a documentary about bluegrass, specifically the Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival (upstate New York) in 2000. There are some absolutely stunning performances on this DVD, but these are frequently spoiled by voice-over interruptions in the middle of songs. I know that it's a doco, and I accept that chat between songs is expected in a doco, but during songs is unacceptable - especially really good songs. The producers of some DVD's just don't have a clue or they don't actually like music. I discovered a new guitarist - Tony Rice - who was unbelievably good, so I am going to look for more material by him. It was also interesting to see Rhonda Vincent before she had her blonde makeover - just as talented but not the sexy siren she's evolved into.
Paul Simon - "Graceland (The African Concert)"
I watched this DVD late Saturday afternoon before going out. The music didn't make much impact on me but this concert is an important piece of music history, being held in Zimbabwe in 1987 when South Africa was still an apartheid state, meaning that the concert couldn't be held there. How things have changed since then. South Africa is now free and Zimbabwe is a basket case...
