Alizée - "En Concert"

This is a young French singer who crept into my heart about a year or so ago. Afaik she has produced 2 cd's and 1 dvd-video (this being it - live recording from her 2003 concerts - dvd released in Oct 2004). Since then she has married and is the proud Mom of a beautiful daughter.

Her music (all in French) is bubbly, pure, fresh and possesses an enchanting type of innocence which seems to appeal to the complete age spectrum - from very young upwards. My 8 year old daughter loves her to bits & so do we.

Btw, the dvd (presented in 16 x 9) is very well recorded and mixed and PQ is superb imho. The audio is presented in DD 5.1, DTS 5.1 and PCM stereo 2.0.

Harry Connick, Jr. - Only You
Only You

Recorded at The Theater Capitole in Quebec City for a WNET PBS segment on the Great Performances series.

As with all of Harry's productions, you can never say there are 'too many notes'. Despite having a 'big band' on stage, there is never a feeling of over-production. Every instrument is clear and precise with just enough accompaniment to maintain cohesion.

SQ, IMHO, is V good. But this is the FIRST audio DVD I have ever seen! ( hey, I’m an old dog but still learning new tricks!) I enjoyed it thoroughly!

Still, it is Harry’s sense of musical austerity that truly makes this an experience worth seeing.
But don’t get me wrong, diversity rules, everything from New Orleans style, to his piano solo that is jaw drooping.

And then there is his voicing. Next to Mel Torme, the greatest crooner of all time; IMHO.

Yes, I sort of like Harry, but many of you would enjoy this one, too. I’m sure of it!

I watched a Fela Kuti dvd from a performance in France. If I wasn't already a fan, I would have hated it and do not reccomend it to anyone. But I will say this... Fela Kuti was terrific.

and if you like Fela Kuti I insist you check out the Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra. If I were sitting next to you I would force Liberation Afrobeat Vol. 1.

If you have never heard of Fela Kuti....

Think Ladysmith Black Mambazo and then forget them, then think about women backup singers, a kick ass funky african rhythm section, Bob Marley Politics, and a man who might have been king in his home country... not like the king of rock and roll, but like a king... or presiedent, or prime minister, or whatever.

It's cool. I promise.

Neko Case - "Live from Austin, Texas"

This was a birthday present. I hadn't even heard of her. The genre is probably called "alternative country" but like most labels that doesn't quite fit. Anyway, very interesting and well worth watching. Excellent SQ and PQ (and so it should be for a 2003 recording).

John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers - 70th Birthday Concert

I watched this two hour, 2003 DVD last night. The concert features three great guitarists - Buddy Whittington (current Bluesbreaker), Mick Taylor (ex-Bluesbreaker and ex-Rolling Stones), and Eric Clapton (ex-Bluesbreaker and current living god). All three were excellent, and I wouldn't like to say which was best. The keyboard player was outstanding too. John Mayall is an ordinary guitarist, an average keyboard player, an acceptable blues harpist, and a passable singer, but he's in great shape for 70 years old and his arrangements of the songs were superb. Hats off to Mr Mayall! He would have been right chuffed by such a great night. Mick Taylor looked positively sick (puffy and pale) but the rest looked in great nick. Long live good old British blues.

Freddie King - Blues Legend (Live in Europe)

Just to prove that I ain't wed to no white boy blues I watched Freddie in concert this evening. I've been looking for this DVD for a while and I wasn't disappointed. Freddie is a great guitarist and a very good singer too. The SQ isn't that good (because it's 1973/4), but what the hell, Freddie is a legend and that's what counts.

DVD, you are missing one of the best DVD concerts of all time. I don't even care if you like the Allman Brothers Band. It's worth owning and watching more than once.

SQ is Top Notch, but the musicianship is even better. Derek Trucks, Warren Haynes, and a sober Greg Allman equal a rock and roll powerhouse. This DVD i shot well, recorded well and captures a band that is playing as well as they did 30 years ago, and I know what I'm saying when I say that.

THIS IS AN AWESOME DVD.

Be it the lighting or the fact that he ages well, Greg does not scare the children. DTS is fantastic. You'll be very pleased.

Crosby, Stills & Nash - "Daylight Again" (1983)

This DVD did nothing for me. I turned it off two thirds through the concert straight after they played "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" which was a pale imitation of their wonderful performance at Woodstock. David Crosby barely participates on stage and looks spaced out. Graham Nash danced around like a gnome on speed. Stephen Stills was great and saved the concert from being a disaster. I loved those guys during the Woodstock era (1969) so this DVD was a big disappointment to me.

I then did some research on the concert to find out what was going on and came across this review from o dubhthaigh, which explains everything. I'll probably watch the DVD again now that I know what's going on.

You're not likely to come across a concert DVD as disturbing as this one. Shot in 1982, weeks before Crosby would appear at The Brandywine Club in West Chester, Pa, and then flee the advance of rushing FBI and US Marshalls to hole up in his boat in Florida before surrendering, this is one of the saddest portraits of an artist I have ever seen. It is also a shining moment for both Nash and Stills.
To be sure, the Daylight Again Tour had been a personal disaster for Crosby. Stills and Nash were under extraordinary financial and professional pressure to pull this off amidst David's self-destruction. The CD itself was honestly a Stills-Nash CD with a song from Crosby. The recording sessions most frequently found Mike Finnegan taking Crosby's part. In the course of the concert tour, the three would come to blows in Philadelphia where Crosby had wandered off-stage to collapse with his crack pipe. By the time they got to LA, even Nash had given up and was determined, along with Stills, to rescue his own reputation. Crosby was a pariah to everyone, and now even his two closest professional allies could no longer bear his presence. Body language tells you everything in this DVD. Most of the time, Crosby is near catatonic, staring vacantly, absent-mindedly strumming occasional chords, slurring and humming his vocal parts, sweating far more from the horrors of his haze than from the bright stage lights. He stands stiff and looks pasty, exhausted, scared. If you have ever been with someone who is dying of cancer, Crosby has that look in his eyes that time of death is, inevitably, now a matter of weeks. Resignation and fear have numbed his every move. He tries several times to get off stage, to be turned around by someone so that he cannot resort to the pipe. Close ups of his hands show his skin looking absolutely terrible. It is painfully heartbreaking and Nash can not bear to look at the man with whom he had so soulfully bonded. Stills is keeping his distance, offering remarks on their friendship that are the kind you make when you are with someone who is dying. "Wasted on the Way" is directed at their comrade, who seems to register the pain in those lyrics in faint grimaces. Guided back to the piano for "Delta", he has the gait of someone who is at the stage of hospice care. That he manages it at all, and that Nash, Finnegan and Stills provide such redemptive treatments to Crosby's failing efforts is nothing short of miraculous. It is a triumph that seems to revive Crosby enough to get through the remainging few songs of the concert with more strength and focus than he had up to that point..

Ok so Don't bother (not that many would, I guess) with the Violent Femmes DVD. It's slapdash at best. Sounds like they took an oldVHS tape and converted it to DVD, picture Quality is a little better than that but this is truly an attempt to bring in some extra cash without spending any at all. Only for the die hard Femmes fan.

Club Dtae (Elvis Costello) is worth it. Small little venue in Memphis, great picture quality and sound is above average. There are a few parts where you can hear a high pitch in the background, I think his mic may have acted up, but overall very good. There isn't much talk about Costello that I have seen on this board, so I might be in such a minority that it doesn'tmatter.

He's matured, he has a terrific respect for the past, and his CD's are now the very best in sound quality. If you haven't checked out River In Reverse, you're cheating yourself.

Johnny Winter - "Live in Times Square"

I don't know whether I should be sad, mad or glad about this DVD.

I love Johnny Winter but the problem with this DVD is that it's filmed in 2003 and he's old and infirm, and therefore well past his best. He's actually only 59 years old but compared to John Mayall at his 70th Birthday Concert, Johnny looks about 89, is seated throughout, and has the shakes. He has a good band but you just can't get past the fact that he can hardly sing and his guitar play is slow and has too many errors.

I love music DVDs because they give me a chance to see artists that I'd never otherwise see. So am I angry that I bought a dud DVD? A little bit perhaps, but hell, I've seen a legend even if the legend is a little tarnished.

There isn't much talk about Costello that I have seen on this board, so I might be in such a minority that it doesn'tmatter.

His wife seems to garner more attention than him, but I think he is one of his generations most prolific and talented musicians. As was Warren Zevon. His last album, The Wind, which he completed just prior to his untimely passing, is a true and underappreciated masterpiece, IMHO.

Classic Hot Rize with Red Knuckles & The Trailblazers

First we watched this wonderful 1987 concert mainly featuring the bluegrass band Hot Rize. The musicianship from all the performers is superb, especially Tim O'Brien who makes it look so so easy.

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - "Farther Along" (2003)

We then watched another magnificent bluegrass / country-rock concert featuring Jimmy Martin, Alison Krauss, Vince Gill, John Hiatt, Vassar Clements, Jerry Douglas, Earl Scruggs, the Del McCoury Band, Rosanne Cash, Taj Mahal, and Iris DeMent. Every song was excellent.

It's just frightening how much good music there is out there!

If Eric had been disguised as someone else I would have thought this was a pretty good concert. However, because I know it's Eric, I was a bit disappointed because I know he can do a lot better.

"One More Car One More Rider" is Eric doing pop rock. A lot of the songs are just too easy for him and he appears to be on autopilot. Wives would enjoy this DVD. It's the blues that fires Eric up and there isn't much blues on this DVD. IMO it isn't a patch on Eric's "Live in Hyde Park" DVD, which is simply outstanding.

This is the first time I've watched "One More Car One More Rider", and I will watch it a couple more times at least. I may even change my mind about it. In the meantime I can't wait for Eric's "Sessions for Robert Johnson" to arrive from Amazon.

Eric Clapton & Friends in Concert: A Benefit for the Crossroads Centre at Antigua (1999)

Overall a top concert DVD with good musicians, songs, SQ and PQ.

The highlight for me was the Jimi Hendrix song "Little Wing" which Eric performed with Sheryl Crow and David Sanborn.

The only lowlights were two awful songs performed by Mary Blige. How she managed to worm her way into such a great lineup is a mystery to me.

One of my top favorites also, and I share your thoughts about Bilge. Never heard her before, but if I could, I would erase it from the dvd.

Favorite moment (makes me laugh) was when David Sanborn played too long and the band had to play an extra four measures while Eric tried to get him to chill.
Excellent PQ and audio.

"River of Tears" is spectacular and I've now decided that "Over the Rainbow", which interestingly is the final encore, is the best version of that song I've heard. Billy Preston's keyboards is stunning throughout the concert.

It just goes to show that I should stick to my rule of listening to something three times before drawing any conclusions.

Telluride Bluegrass Festival: Thirty Years

Feeling a little jaded? Need some new and different music to perk you up? Then this is the DVD for you.

Telluride is NOT a bluegrass festival in the traditional sense. It's an opportunity for the best bluegrass musicians to go somewhere, experiment, and have fun. The results are outstanding - new, different and wonderful songs performed by superb musicians. This genre is sometimes referred to as "newgrass".

The only criticism I have of this DVD is that the songs are interspersed with interviews, many of which are inserted to remind us what a wonderful and different experience Telluride is. Hey, I have eyes and ears - I can tell this without being told. These interviews will be a bore next time I watch. However, don't let that stop you buying this DVD.

You're right Nigel, it is a great DVD although I still think "Live in Hyde Park" edges it overall.

I watched Hyde Park again last Friday night with the one muso friend of mine who hasn't seen it and it reminded me that this DVD is way ahead of "One More Car One More Rider" and other Eric concerts in terms of Eric's commitment to the show. I've never seen Eric get more worked up than in the song "Five Long Years".

My friend, who is an excellent musician and plays bass in a band occasionally, was amazed at Eric's commitment. He's seen Eric lots of times where he's one of the gang but it was a new experience watching Eric the showman in charge of a large band.

Thin Lizzy - "1983 Thunder And Lightning Concert"

This is a terrible concert by a once good rock band that had come to the end of the road due to drug abuse. I hadn't seen Irish legend Phil Lynott (bass/vocals) on film before so at least I've now achieved that.

The SQ and PQ are as awful as the performance.

Sorry it's taken so long to post this quick concert review but I've been busier than the proverbial one armed juggler.

I'm sure it'll come as no surprise when I tell you that this concert was fantastic. Eric was in top form and played great. I wonder how it must feel to be the best in the world at something...Someone might not be a big fan of his sound or his songs, but there can be no dispute that his basic guitar fundamentals are virtually flawless--his form almost perfection. He's simply in a class by himself.

At the risk of stating the obvious this concert was a guitar lover's fantasy. Each song had between two and four great guitar solos in it. Eric would start with one then Derek Trucks would take a turn then Doyle Bramhill
would play and then hand it back to Eric again to finish it up. Guitar Heaven!

As great as the guitar talents of Trucks, Bramhill, and Cray (Robert Cray opened the show and came back for the Crossroads encore) are it was still the students and the sensei when Eric played. I have no doubt that having that young talent on stage with him probably inspired Eric to kick it up a notch or two because his playing was impeccable.

They played for two full hours and the only thing bad I can say is that I wished they would have played longer because there were many more songs I would have liked to have heard.

If we're using the magical night at Hyde Park as a measuring stick and giving it a 10 then I feel comfortable giving this concert very close to a 9. I am hopeful that they record it and release it on DVD at some point.

Thank you for the review Gump. It mirrors what my friends told me about their concert. I should have gone to Melbourne and seen them too but I'm off to the Byron Bay Festival in Australia at Easter and there's only so much budget available for these trips...

One of the things I admire most about Eric Clapton is the effort that he puts in to organising music events and mentoring other players. The Crossroads Guitar Festival is an excellent example. That reminds me, Crossroads is on again this year (in Texas I think, after speculation that it would be held in Chicago) and whilst I won't be attending I will definitely buy the DVD if one is released. John McLaughlin will play there apparently.

I have the Eric Clapton - "Sessions for Robert Johnson" DVD sitting here waiting to be played. Doyle Bramhall II features in that DVD in a major way.
