pioneer 989 - dedicated cd player needed?

    hi guys,

we have now been using our 989 for a few weeks on our 5060 plasma and we love it - far superior to anything we have owned before in terms of picture quality.

as we are using the 989 for cd listening also, we are now curious to know if we would benefit from having a dedicated cd player also? not talking a huge $$$ one but something like the cambridge audio azur 640c v2 comes to mind.

firstly would something like the 640c outperform the 989 for cd listening? and if so, is there something better than that 640c that we should be looking at for the same $$$?

    cheers,

    julie

    Julie,

You'll definitely gain some quality on Redbook playback by going with a dedicated player. Simplistically, DVD players are optimized for that media whereas CD players are focused (pun intended) on getting the best out of CDs and not DVDs. Now, whether or not the amount of improvement is enough is another question entirely. I definitely recommend auditioning your intended purchase at home before taking the plunge, or make sure that your dealer has a good return policy.

Dedicated CD Player vs. DVD Player
      by Jeff Kowerchuk
Just wondering what everyone's thoughts were on having a dedicated CD player for audio CDs vs. using a DVD player as their source?

Right now I have a Classe CDP .3 which I have no complaints with whatsoever. However, looking at Sony's new ES DVD player and seeing that it will incorporate...

better cd sound: i-link dvd player or dedicated cd player?
      by krek
      Hello there,

I own a Pioneer receiver wich has an i-link input on board. I read that there are sound quality benefits when using this input instead of an analoge or coaxial input.

Here's my question: what to buy when the decision is made on cd playback quality? A dedicated...

      Universal player recommendation

My sig has my current equipments. Recently my friend brought his Linn Genki cd player over, and I was amazed with the sound quality. My denon produces 80% of that sound when playing SACDs and 60% of that sound (imho ofcourse) when playing cds. Living in a small nyc apt, I really don't want a dedicated...

Escient Fireball vs. Dedicated CD Player
      by EAmin
I've been entertaining switching out my Rotel CD player for a Escient Fireball for convenience, but I don't want to sacrifice sound. I was wondering if I coupled one of these with a DAC-1, will it sound as good or close to my dedicated player? Supposedly, it is roughly the same machine as the McIntosh...
