    Speaker design

Can anyone enlighten me on what makes a speaker more or less efficient. I know generally that ribbons and electostatics are less effecient than bass reflex designs, so this reason I would like to ask about the bass reflex design only. When designing a speaker what dictates speaker efficiency. If the designer wants his speaker to be more efficient what changes would he make? Is there any correlation between speaker efficiency and the quality of sound? I've read an article where a designer tried to make his speaker more efficient but at the loss of sound quality.

I've always wonder from a technical viewpoint how sounds relates to what we hear.

    Any insight would be appreciated.
